I have a 1994 Lexus 400 with a power steering leak. What are my options, the power steering does really make any noise when its full. Is it worth replacing the whole thing will a remanufactured part or replace O'rings and be done with it. How would you rate the difficulty in replacing this part

Depending on where the leak is located, it could be as simple as replacing a hose that could take and hour. Or replacing the pump or steering gear that could take a weekend. Try getting some “Oil Dye” and a black light to locate the leak.

Good morning,
There are a few possible reason for your leak:
1) check your rack for leaks by the dust boots

2) check your power-steering reservoir return line for leaks.( over time they tend to split and/or crack)

3) check your radiator for milky appearance (if this is your issue - lots of work ahead).

SOURCE: LEXUS LS 400 STEERING DOESNT GO DOWN

I had the same problem and took the steering wheel apart on the left side where the lift motor is. There is a plastic gear that controls your lift that is stripped out. I went to the dealership and they wanted $500 for the assembly, they wouldn't sell just the gear. I went home and after I thought about it a while came up with the idea to turn the gear around backwards since the teeth on that side were in good shape. I put it back together and it has worked great ever since. This should work for you with very little effort. I do now however do not hold or apply alot of pressure to the wheel when it is lifting as this is what causes this problem in the first place. Hope this helps you. Todd

There really is not much difference in fluids. If you have been having issues I would suggest a bottle of Lucas power steering conditioner.

the steering lines fittings are different sizes it could be the sensor however make sure all the air is bleed out of the system first. to do this with the engine running turn the steering wheel full left and full right until you hear no noise then check the steering fluid level and repeat as needed.

that could be the rack and pinion leaking. as far as the noise goes, it is more than likely the same thing. have your local mechanic check it out because if its the power steering pump its cheaper to fix that than it will be to have the rack replaced.
