an idler pulley is any pulley that just spins but does no work; that's why it's called idler. look for any pulley or roller which is there just to route the belt somewhere, not attached to any pump or motor or compressor or alternator or water pump, etc. I'm telling you this way because sometimes there are more than one.

Before installing a new belt spin all pulleys by hand. They should spin amoothly and freely. Check alternator, idler, tensioner, power steering and A/C. If any are hard, rough, or seized replace. Check that the belt aligns correctly with all pulleys and remove any debris embedded in the grooves.

What makes a belt squeak?


Belts squeak for the same reason tires do when they spin. They are slipping. Something isn't turning as fast as the belt wants it to. On ford it's usually ether the idler sprocket or the tensioner. If you remove the belt and try spinning all of the pulleys by hand.( note the crank wont spin freely) you will usually be able to tell witch ones slipping.

With the belt off, try to spin each pulley that spins and see if there is any roughness or flat spots on the bearings that you can detect with your hands.

Usually, the bearings on Alternators or idler pulleys go bad before the a/c because the a/c should have oil in it. However, it could be any of the pulleys that the belt spins on.

It can be a process of elimination of changing parts until the sound goes away, if you can't detect it under free spinning conditions with the belt off.

This pulley should be spring loaded and you should have a diagram of the belt path on a label under the hood. There should be a square hole in the casting for a breaker bar or rachet to use as a lever to push or pull the pulley.

One of the secrets to installing the belt is not using the Idler pulley as the last pulley the belt attaches to. You are better off to use a stationary pulley in an easy to reach area as the last pulley to slip the belt over. In some cases you can just lean on the Idler pulley and press it down with the belt already over it. Then use the slack to slip the belt over another pulley, stationary, like the Alternator or water pump pulley.

If in doubt about out or in for the spring, just look at the diagram and see which side of the picture shows the belt looping around it. It (Idler pulley) is always suppose to push against the belt. If the belt runs to the right of the Idler, the spring pushes right. up to up, down to down, left to left. This means you get clearance by pushing the Idler in the opposite direction.

Timing belts are supposed to be replaced in intervals, on this vehicle every 60,000 miles. The timing belt may look good, but they mostly stretch over time. As for the looseness and becoming tight, its because there is different compression tension that pull either way. But to be loose to the point you can spin the tensioner pulley, replace everything (belt, tensioner, idler pulley, water pump)!!

Serpentine belt slips off idler pulley


The A/C pully is supposed to spin freely until the AC is activated to run.. The cranshaft pully does not. Replace the tensioner pully. The belt has to fit in between the grooves on the pullys.
