Hello, a quick way to check the alternator is to unplug the battery while the truck is running.

If it shuts off the alternator is junk. if it remains running then the alternator is doing its job.

The tach sounds like it could be a totally different issue but i had a 92 that did the same thing till i changed the alternator,

Have you checked the belts make sure it's in good repair.

It sounds like the alternator is draining the battery. I would remove the alternator and have it tested at a local parts store. I would also charge the battery and have it tested too.

i will have it tested. but what got me was it would die, and my tach would max out. when i did get it running again, the tach would fluctuate rapidly

There may not be enough voltage available for the tach to function properly.

I would consider the battery. How old is it? Batteries, when it contains a shorted cell, can cause all kinds of freaky situations. It might start, might not, then may run but when that cell shorts out, then it can kill the engine. If you can get it tested or can swap the battery with another, that may provide some direction. I had similar problems with my Chevy van and it ended up being the battery - 7 years old. Good luck.

To remove the lead from the battery to the alternator while it is running is to invite a destroyed alternator . Varying voltages with engine RPM is indicative of a bad battery or problem alternator regulator . Have a load test done on the battery to check for cell problems and have the alternator bench tested to check the performance .

Motor is sputtering & the battery light is on

Check the voltage at the battery. with the car running you should see more than 13.5 volts. If there is less than 12 volts than the alternator is not charging. Your engine needs at least 9 volts in order to stay running. When it starts to get below that the symptoms you described can occur.

Not a sensor or fuse. Possibly the battery: only way to know is have it checked. Best way is check when car wont start. Should have over 12 volts. I would suspect alternator is not charging battery. Put a voltmeter on battery when car is running. Voltmeter should read 13.5-14 volts. If not, something's not right. Check your battery grounds for tightness and cleaness. Sometimes a loose connection will keep battery from either charging or starting. If you still have the problem, check your starter for a short, drawing too much amperage.

a fuse will not cause the battery light to come on, have you replaced the large connector at the back of the alternator? (avil from a Ford dealer) that is the usual problem.

My 2000 ford ranger and something draining battery

bad alternator possible or bad battery..even though its new that battery can be bad. I would take a volt meter and with the engine running check the volts of the battery..If the volts are 12 you need to replace alternator, if volts are 14 you need to check the battery. to check the battery hold the volt meter to the battery and have someone start the car..while the starter is cranking battery volts should not drop below 10volts.if they do your battery is bad.

it probably your alternator You will need a new one. Your battery may be salvageable, depends on how many times that bad alternator drained it. Have it tested at Autozone or Sears.

1991 ford ranger battery light

bad battery module for the light or a dieing cell in battery

batterys can be tested and wont show a dead cell at all but you will be told that the battery good
most batterys are refurbished batterys sometimes getting the luck of a good battery is 50/50 chance

heres a way to test the battery and alternator at the same time
start vehicle
disconnect battery positive post
if vehicle dies the alternator is at fault if vehicle doesnt die its the batterys life dead cell
