Question about 1987 Volvo 240
It sounds like you have left off the small earth lead or you have contacted some wires somewhere. go over the wiring again. what is quite common is a wire getting jammed between the altenator and the brace that holds it. most likely though it will be the small thin wire to the back of the alt, take a look at that first. also it could be a duff alt, check the main battery leads and earth wire to the gearbox also.
