Question about 1996 BMW 318
I presume you had this issue with the old ignition just spinning around and not starting the car? I had this same thing and chnaged the ignition over, still would not work got lights but no engine turn over, I took it back off and realigned it, turns out when I had removed the old one the position of the black box part was one turn behind so when I was tuning the key it was not getting to the turn the engine over part just the ignition lights.
Also some of these ignition barrels have a black shroud around them inside that is the immobilizer code for the transponder you will need to swap that for you origional one, you will be able to tell if it has one as there would be a wired plug going to it, if no plug then your model does not have it.
I hope that helps, I know its a bit of a mess on but most likely will just need removing and refitting.
