Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I have a 89 lwb silverado v6 It will turn over well the starter will turn over but nothing on the belt will spin. I can turn everything on the belt over by hand but when I go to crank it the starter just spins. Please help asap. Family vehicle

If the lower pulley on the front of the engine does not turn when the starter is engaged then the problem is either that the flywheel is missing teeth (usually very noisy) or the bendix drive in the starter has broken. That is replaceable if you are good with that kind of thing but if the starter is old, it may not be worth the effort. (so just change the starter). There could also be a problem with the front pulley but that is extremely rare.

    Well its actually my friends truck but he told me he dropped the dust cover and the torque converter can move back and forth by hand? He was told by someone it was his crank shaft. I'm just trying to see if its going to be the whole motor or something cheaper that he can afford.

    Also the lower pulley can be turned by hand along with everything else on the serptine belt. Belt isnt loose. I'm no mechanic so we will pull the starter and get that checked.

    Starter may be fine electrically but have the sprague in the bendix drive checked. Also since you have a cover there remove it and see if the flywheel turns with the starter. If it does and the engine does not turn either the flywheel bolts are sheared or the crank is broken (that's very rare)

    ok ya one of his friends from work told him its his crank shaft which if thats broken how can I turn the motor over by hand?

    With a snapped crankshaft, you can turn one end and turn the other end because the crank is still supported by the main bearings. But, you can't turn one end and have the other end turning because both halves are not connected. And, like I said, broken cranks are extremely rare except in racemobiles. Even then, the most common failure is when someone uses a cast crank instead of a forged one, then gets into a bit of detonation. I'm betting on the starter drive or the flywheel being bad. You need to look.

    He just took it to a shop for $350 it was the flywheel cracked in 3 places. Hope this helps others.

    Glad it's fixed. Seems I was on the right track with the flywheel bolt idea. It always helps to be able to see it though. That kind of problem is easily seen with the cover removed. I'm surprised you did not report any previous noise ...generally as the flywheel begins to fail, it makes a noise that is often mistaken for a bad lifter or engine bearing for at least a week before the center breaks out completely!!

Did your timing belt break? You need to check that your camshaft is still turning with the engine cranking over. If it is, I would put a socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt and see how easily the engine can be turned by hand. This is to check for mechanical internal damage. Why does it turn over slowly? Either the battery is low, or starter has a problem, or there is internal damage. Check everything out carefully, assume nothing. If battery is charged up, could there be a connection problem at one of the battery terminals, or a bad connection somewhere? If all connections are good, why does starter spin slow? It could have a partial short, or there could be internal engine damage. Have the starter tested next. See what I mean by assume nothing, but test everything?

You can get the battery tested at Autozone,Advance, and Oreilys for free. Later, once you find out if the battery is alright,and if you can get the car started, drive back to one of the stores and get the starter tested on the car. Or you can pull the starter and take it along with the battery and have both benchchecked.

You could have timing issues in the Camaro which would make it hard to turn over. But the v-8 Dodge usually has a gear system in their starters that increases the Torque in the starter drive. This feature can account for the ease of starting the Dodge with the Camaro battery.

Also check your starter Relay in the Camaro. You may be losing Voltage before the juice reaches the starter with a fried Relay.

Starter motor locks up on my 89 silverado only in the morning


If the starters old it gets build up on the insides & on cold mornings the steel contracts cuasing the soliniod to lock up try pooring hot water over the solinoid part of the starter motor as a quik fix :)

the starter needs a starter drive, even if the engine is locked up the starter should still engage with the flywheel, but before i did any thing i would try to turn the engine over by hand,you can do this by using a socket and ratchet on the front crankshaft pulley mount bolt if you cant turn the engine over by hand try removing the drive belt and see if you can turn it then, if you can then check all the drive pulley's all should turn freely by hand, if the engine still will not turn by hand with out the belt then you most likely have sized the engine.

Nothing is fast,but could be easy with the know how and right tools.Does it have a serpentine belt,thats one big belt that covers everything that turns...or 2 or 3 separate belts,,,,,,,,,serpentine belt is easy and faster.

Honda Passport started, and shut off moments later. Won't start


AS long as the belt is turning properly the belt is good & has nothing to do w NO START. Double check the alarm/cutoff and all the fuses. Start w the basics. Good luck

When starting car turning ignition only hear a spinning sound but car didnt start


Probably the starter itself, or the starter solenoid on the side of the starter. Usually only available as one unit anyway for most vehicles. Make sure the starter motor connections are all tight before replacing it, wiring and retaining bolts, hopefully that's all it is. The other possibility is that the flywheel ring-gear could be damaged and not allowing the starter pinion gear to engage, in which case that would need to be replaced also, which involves removing the gearbox, so hope thats not the problem!
