Question about 1989 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I bought a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 2 dr 4x4. Today the power steering got hard and the alternator light on the panel turned on, when I accelerate the problem goes away until it lowers RPM's when I got home from a 10 minute ride there was pressurized water coming out from the hose in the coolant reservoir. Any clues? I think it could be a crankshaft pulley problem.

My power steering went out on my 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited. While trying to get it home the "check guages" light came on, then the battery voltage went way down and the car began to over...

Pretty much sounds as if the drive belt has come off the engine. When that happens, your power steering pump won't turn (hard steering), check gauges or check engine light comes on (because alternator no longer is turning, and engine will overheat (water pump not turning either).
Replace the belt and check all pulleys to make sure none are binding or loose (could be why belt came off other than failure from age...takes a minute to check and avoids problems later)

sounds like the belt may be loose, if it is tight I would go with the power steering is going out. As when you have a higher rpm the steering improves. Hope this helps tim

Battery dont charge

Check all the connections. The battery clamps should be tight. Wires on the alternator should all be tight. Have you watched your battery charge indicator when the Jeep died to see if it was falling below 13 volts?
