There is a check valve in the transmission cooling lines on these trucks. This valve is in the line near the radiator on the passenger side. This valve can get stuck and cause the Trans to overheat due to no trans cooler flow. When these Transmission get hot overdrive goes out. Located this valve take the line apart near it and use a small screwdriver and try to free it up. It is spring loaded and should push in and spring out easily. If you can't you must replace it. Don't drive it like that or you could ruin the transmission

You never drive even ten miles with ANY trans issue,
unless you plan on ruining it

You always diagnose & resolve All code related issues
BEFORE you can diagnose trans issues

The trans strategy is part of & based off a complete powertrain
package working properly & together

Diagnose all codes, fix those issueS,then work on the trans
solenoid for od & any codes it has.

Do not use it until ALL Issues are 100% THE ENTIRE VEHICLE
100%

1998 dodge ram 1500 5.9 360 overdrive kicks off and transmission overheats

when your trans hits 110 degrees C, it will do that by default. You MUST have the trans oil cooler checked for blockage, because this problem has led to seized parts on a few that I've rebuilt as a direct consequence. I have also installed auxiliary trans oil coolers on several Grand Cherokees which had this problem. high temperatures will kill your trans.

The torque converter is where OD takes place. Look at your transmission fluid cooler to see if it's blocked. The TCM module controls the OD functions so it may not be sending the correct signals.

I have a 1999 Tiburon. Trans starts off in 2nd gear and goes to 3rd but will not go into overdrive. When starting cold though, it will shift 1,2&3. Also overdrive(4th gear) light will not come on.

I would check into the Trans oil temp sensor, they are known to keep the trans from shifting into 4th gear if they have a open or a shorted circuit...This may also be the culprit for the other issues you are experiencing when the trans is at diff temps and doing diff things....The other thing that is known for going bad in that Transaxle is the Sunshell...The splines on the inside of the sunshell strip out and than you will lose pretty much all forward gears,Except for 1st gear most likely and you will also lose Reverse if the Sunshell goes bad...But this will not act any different if the temperature is cold or hot

Trans temp and od light is on what does this mean

Transmission Temperature light only comes on when the transmission has reached the operating limits and tells the temp sender to send a warning. The OD light is the Over Drive light.
There may be several reasons causing the Trans. Temp light to come on. The first would be if the transmission is low on transmission fluid.
Place you vehicle on a level surface. You can check this by letting the vehicle warm up to normal operating temperature, then open the hood and remove the transmission dipstick and wipe it clean with a paper towel or shop rag. Then reinsert it and remove it again, holding it horizontal look at the end of the dipstick. You will see a level mark and a add mark. If it's on the add mark then you need to add transmission fluid. Do not add more then 8 ounces at a time, before rechecking the level.
If the fluid is full, smell the fluid on the dipstick, does it have a burnt smell?
If the fluid has a burnt smell or it's a dark brown color then you will need to change the transmission fluid and filter.
The Overdrive light is on due to high transmission temp or because the Overdrive button has been pushed. ( If equipped with a manual overdrive button)
When the transmission is hot it will turn the overdrive off to increase the speed and pressure of the transmission fluid to help cool the transmission.
So this problem will go hand in hand if you find a problem with the transmission fluid.
You can also take you vehicle to you local auto parts store and have them check the engine codes. There may be another problem causing this issue.

Overdrive Problem.

The throttle sensor on higher mileage vehicles has been know to cause this type concern. The voltage that the engine and trans controller sees starts to get erratic from the sensor and will kick out of OD.

sounds like a stuck valve. I'm still new to transmission stuff so I could be wrong. he could probably get a transmission rebuild book and maybe just do it himself. it would be the cheapest unless you knows someone
