Will not start or turn over. Replaced battery. I hear a clicking sound when I turn the key on around the starter relay and starter. When I turn the ignition further to start, the lights and dash lights go out. Any ideas.... Thanks, Steve

Steve, take the starter off and have it checked at a local parts store ie:Auto zone, O'reiley's ect. I would be willing to bet that the starter is out. the reason i think this is because of that fact that you said that the lights go out when you turn the ignition to the "start" position, this usually means there is a short in the starter. For a quick fix, you could have someone hold the key in the on position and lightly tap on the starter with a hammer to see if it is just bound up.

Thanks. I tapped the starter with a hammer then started it right up. At least I can get to the parts store and replace the starter. Thanks for your help.

2006 pt cruiser. It ran, stood for around 2month and won't crank up. I hear the fuel pump, the starter will not move, I replaced the starter and still no crank or move on the starter.

Can you hear a relay clicking when you turn the key over to "Start"? if not then a faulty relay could be the reason the starter motor is not cranking over. Is the starter solenoid "clicking in" but the engine not turning over? if so , can you turn the engine over by hand?

Car turning then it won't,battery is fine, then sometimes key turns but just clicks.is key the problem? Please help.

sounds like the starter is getting tired. if you can hear clicking when you attempt to start, this indicates a good key switch and starter relay. a simple voltage measurement at the starter will verify. the start signal can also be checked at the relay.

Clean the battery post's and terminals and hot wires to starter and the ends of the ground wires. Try to jump start it if it starts it may be your battery or your starter is going bad.

NO START 1999 CAVALIER

If the click you hear is from the starter solenoid mounted on the starter, it could either be a bad starter or poor connections between battery and starter. Raise the hood and listen closely near the starter for the click, when someone turns the key to crank. If the click is from the starter solenoid, have starter tested or replaced. If click is from a relay under the hood, then the start circuit will have to be further diagnosed.

Hi, what you hear is probably the starter relay which may have burned it's contacts. See if you can find it and swap it with a similar one. If the relay is good, the problem is the brown wire from the relay to the starter solenoid. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Why it wont start even the battries new??

Does the engine crank/roll over? If not, and you havenew batteries and your hear a click, then it's your starter, the unit need to be replaced in order to work. If the engine roll over/crank but does not start, then it's either eletrical, or fuel. First sit in your car and put the key to "On" not acc position and try to listen if you hear a slight hiss follow by a slight click, thump from the back of your passenger seats. If you do, then the fuelpump is working, and would 97% be your ignition coil which is located inside the distruburator and needs replacement. If you don't hear your fuel pump from the rear passenger area hissing follow by a click, then your fuel relay might be bad, and try to swtich your relay around with another compatible relay. If nothing is heard after so, then your fuel pump is fried, need to replace fuel pump.

My 2002 explored will not start. It don't crank at all. The battery is good and I replaced the starter. What could be the problem.

the wiring connection from the relay or the relay itself might be the problem. locate the relay and turn the key start it then if you hear a click sound on the relay meaning its functioning, but the contact from batt to starter may be damaged.try to jumper it.

Intermittent no start. Battery/charging system ok

If it intermittently starts, the battery/charging systems are ok and you hear the relay click, I would suspect a starter going bad. When the engine won't start have some one hold the key to the run position (as if you were cranking the engine) and tap lightly on the starter housing with a metal hammer. Be careful not to hit any of the wires on the starter. If the engine starts cranking and or starts, the starter is going bad. Chances are the armature is burn't or the brushes are worn out. It is usually cheaper just to put in a re-man starter then trying to rebuild it. And since the car is relatively new, chances are you won't be able find parts for it. Now a word of caution here, when you are tapping on the starter be careful not to be next to any moving parts (pulleys, belts, etc) since the engine may start. Also another thing you could check for is loose power cables. You might want to try this before checking the starter because it's easier. Try wiggling the battery connections, follow the negative to ground and wiggle and do the same thing with the positive cable to the starter. You should not be able to wiggle the connections at all. If you can the connections will need to be either tightened or the connector replaced. This should solve your problem. You could also try swapping your relays around and see if this fixes it (just because a relay clicks dosen't mean its necessarily working right.
