look on dip stick you should see cross hatched area with add oil or oil full mark.if you wipe oil dip stick with a clean paper towel and dip stick look dry no sign of oil add little oil at a time see if oil level reach add oil mark or the full mark.if oil is low. low oil light will turn on if bulb is blowed but if dip stick look dry oil level could be low,add little bit at a time dont over fill.
Buy 5 qts of oil. Drain the oil and replace the filter. Add 4 qts and start the engine. let it idle for a few minutes. Shut it off and recheck the level on the dipstick, use the last qt to finish adding to full if necessary.
put in 3.5 quarts of oil and before you start the car check the oil level on the dip stick.it should be about half a quart above the full line on the dip stick(upper line) i assume you are changing your own oil and filter.start car let it run a little while shut car off let it stand and recheck oil level.it should be at the full mark.if low put in rest of the last quart of oil.recheck.most cars hold 4 quarts.
I just bought a 2005 envoy too. I read in the manual that the 4.6 6 cyl engine needs 7 qts total. 2 Over the normal oil change. Is it possible it wasn't low to start? I noticed when Walmart changed the oil they charged extra for the change because it needed the two extra qts. However my dip stick has oil over the full mark. Seemed strange but I haven't had any leaks and after 3k mile no change in level. Make sure you had the correct about the first time.
Really you should not have to add oil. But to find out have jeep on level surface and use the dip stick to check. Check with car off, pull dip stick out and wipe off and reinsert, Pull back out and read the stick only add if it is low. Do not over fill.
normal with oil filter is 4.3 qts. do not trust the dipstick, it is a very crude measuring device. the best way to find out exactly where on the dipstick to look, is to completely drain your oil, and change the filter. do this when the engine is warm, and let it drain for a while. then, add fresh oil and filter, exactly 4.3 qts, and start it for a minute(to get the oil thru the filter). let it sit for at least 30 minutes to allow all the oil to get back into the sump. THEN see where it is on the dipstick. on both our cars, the dipstick shows almost a qt low, even tho 4.3 qts has been added.
most only take 5 qt put in 4 and check the dip stick if it is on full run the engine for a min and let it stand for a bit recheck and add what you need to full mark
lvd, Start the car, leave the shifter in park position.
Remove the transmission dip stick, wipe it clean, reinsert the dip stick and verify it is between the add and full mark.
Do not go over the full mark as that will create a slip condition caused by foaming oil.
Let me know.
