What is the recommended spark plug gap for this engine?

Use the recommendations in the owners manual, where applicable. Different plug manufacturers may use different gaps? Some type spark plugs you don't gap, the gap is pre-set.

.043 gap should work ok.

Spark plug gap spark plug gap for 2005 Volkswagen

Your plugs for your Jetta and most cars now are 'pre-gapped' so no adjustment is required...simply remove old ones and replace with new plugs....

Changed oil and spark plugs in my 2000 volkswagon jetta and now the check engine light is on any ideas why its on

I don't believe the oil change would cause the problem. The only thing I can think of that would cause the engine light to be ON is maybe the spark plug gap isn't correct. That may cause delay or pre-firing the fuel in the cylinder.

But, there are many emission sensors in the car that will make the engine light come ON. Not to mention the big list of trouble codes for the engine light. The engine light code will give you a big clue of what's causing the problem.

Best way to find out what's going on engine light is to have an auto-parts store hook up a engine code reader and tell you what the code means and the problem. Most auto-part store will do this for free.
If you get a codes like P0300, P0301, P0302, and etc. Then the spark plugs need to be look into.

1998 volkswagon jetta manual transmission is hard to shift

Transmission problem...

I'd check the fluid levels... on most if not all 98's there is no tranny fluid stick so you have to either look for the plug on the transmission. Most cars have 2. One on the bottom and one half way up from the bottom of the transmission driver's side. Top it off until the tranny fluid runs out of the hole.

If this doesnt help... you need to get it checked.
