Question about Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Hi, my daughter has a '96 Mercury Sable. It has a new battery (within last six months) but has occasionally been dead. I've checked the terminals, charged the battery, pulled lights in trunk... I think it may be a sticking switch on one of the doors. Can I just pull a fuse (and if so, which one) to fix this or do I have to go to the trouble of pulling the door panel off? Or could something else be going on? Being a teenagers school car, I don't want to go into too much expense. Thanks for any help you can give. C & R Schlatter

Remove the ecm fuse, disconnect the battery neg cale and bridge it with a test light, if the light stays on there is a closed ciircuit in the car, pull fuses one at a time to find the circuit, then you know where to search

Mercury Sable Problems

  • The car is silent when you turn the key in the ignition. Check the battery terminal cable connections. (See How to Check Your Car Battery.) If they look very corroded, force the point of a screwdriver (with an insulated or wooden handle) between the connector and the terminal post and twist it to lodge it firmly. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, you need to clean or replace your cables.
  • The car makes a clicking noise but won't start. This sound usually means a dead battery. If not, check the wiring to and from the starter for a loose connection.
  • The car cranks over but won't start. Check the fuel supply to your engine. If that's okay, check whether the electrical spark is getting to your spark plugs.
  • The engine starts but dies. If your car has a carburetor, check your carburetor adjustment and your choke to see whether the choke is first closing and then opening. If you have fuel injection, you'll need professional help.

I believe I need to replace the battery in my 2000 Sable, but need to know which battery to buy. I had the car jumped on Saturday, but it would not start yesterday. My husband, who is out of town, said...

on the old battery there will be a number like 36R-60. 36 is the group number or part number of the battery, R means reverse terminal, and 60 is the months the battery is warrantied for or expected to last.

Bought a 1997 mercury sable today, guy said it needed a starter, charged dead battery and replaced starter. It fired right up, was driving it home it died, oil light, battery light, and check engine light...

Try checking the altenator. If the starter and battery were gimpy, the altenator may have a blown regulator too!. It sounds like there is a short in the system causing this problem. Most likely the altenator or component in the charging loop. WF

Have to jump start car even though battery was checked good condition

If the car will not start with the battery as fitted, but will start fine with a jump start (which is just substituting power from another battery) then clearly the battery in the vehicle is faulty, dead or discharged. I am assuming of course that the cables are properly attached to the battery as fitted and the battery terminals are clean.

First - remove the cables from the battery terminals and give the battery terminals (and cable contacts) a good clean. Then charge the battery even if you think it is ok. Then re-connect the cables to the battery terminals. If the car will not start on that battery then it is either dead or faulty. If the car will start fine with a jump start (as you have indicated it definitely will) then you will need a new battery. If the battery fitted to the car is about 3 or more years old then you can anticipate problems with it especially if it has been fully discharged a few times or if it is one of the low price models.
(Some poor quality batteries on the market will die with 2 years of use. The warranty period on the battery is a fair indicator of the quality of battery you have. Many lower priced models are just 12 months which is the manufacturer saying to you that they have such little confidence in the longevity of the battery that they will only guarantee it will perform for 12 months.)

Cheers
Sean

2003 Mercury Sable - transmission jerking

This is a front wheel drive vehicle and has no power-train components in the rear of the car. The noise coming from the back is not related to your transmission. I would highly reccommend going to a ford dealership as these are typically trust-worthy and always use OEM parts. I also have an 03 sable with 101k miles it has always been reliable and has original transmission. It is possible something else is hard ****.

96 sable wagon keyless entry

Try re-programing the system.
These are the instructions from the service manual.

. Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 5 times within 10 seconds, with the 5th time ending
in RUN. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming mode.

2. Within 20 seconds press any button on first keyless remote. Door locks will cycle
to confirm programming.

3. Within 20 seconds, press any button on second keyless remote. Door locks will
cycle again to confirm programming.

4. Turn ignition to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.
