Question about 1997 Dodge Dakota

2 Answers

Is there any reason to believe that taking the bed up on a 1997 Dakota would be easier than dropping the gas tank when replacing the fuel pump and sending unit? If gas gauge is not working and the connection is OK, then next step aims at the fuel pump and sending unit doesn't it? Bill

Thanks geo. I want to try this repair with as much simplicity as possible. I have a heavy duty car jack to hold the tank. Will I have to drop the tank to the ground? Bill

Hey Bill!
Not necessarily - you could have a bad ground wire which would keep the gauge from working. Test your leads going into the tank with a continuity tester to see if it's a ground issue - you could also put in a temporary ground wire into the sending unit to see if the gauge works then. It's a lot more work to pull a bed than a tank - sometimes you can get away with lowering 1 side of the tank to gain access to the pump / sending unit. I would also check if there's a hidden relay somewhere - dodge does some tricky things sometimes!
Hope this helps!

It depends on if the sending unit is mounted on top or the side of the tank - I'd get some empty gas cans or milk jugs and siphon off as much fuel as you can - that will make the tank much easier to manage. a rolling floor jack would be easier to work with than a bottle jack, and i would definitely have a helper handy to balance the tank if you need to come all the way out!
    Good luck and be careful!!

Pulling the bed entails more ( probably stuck ) bolts, wire harness mounts, and electrical connectors. Pulling the tank is the easy route in comparison.

Hi, once the connection is o.k and the gas gauge is not working then you have to definitely aim at the fuel pump and sending unit as you have rightly suggested.
The easist way to do this is to lift the bed off. This requires removing the six-eight bolts from the underside of the frame. Be sure to disconnect any lighting wires then two people can easily lift the bed off. The fuel tank is then exposed and the fuel pump/filter can be removed. (Note: you will be exposing the gas in the tank so be sure to not make any sparks or to have an open heat source.)

How do i change the fuel pump on a 2007 F350 super duty 6.0 diesel

siphon gas out drop the tank undo the harness twist the retaining ring pull pump. install in reverse.

probably be easier to just pull the truck bed off. usually requires unbolting 4-8 bolts holding bed on from inside the floor of bed. unhooking wiring harnwess and unhooking gas tank filler neck from hose leading to tank. you will need help of at least 3 others to pull the bed unless you devise a lift or a stand for your bed to sit on. think of it like a semi truck unhooking from a trailer. bed stays put truck moves forward. replace pump and back up under the bed and reattach. good luck

How to remove the gas tank on a 1990 dodge dakota, i can not find how to loosen straps

The easiest way to work on the fuel tank is to take out the 8 bolts that hold the bed to the frame, they are bolted from underneath. Unplug the tail lights and the filler neck and just lift the bed off and sit aside. You can now sit on the rear tire and work on the fuel pump. Much easier than having to drop the tank.

Before you just throw off the 8 bed bolts, first you have to disconnect battery cables, tail lamp wires, the exhaust support hangar, fuel vent hoses, spare tire winch, then the hold down bolts.

Please is it easier to take the truck bed off or drop the gas tank to change the fuel pump on a 1992 chevy silverado 1500

That depends on how much fuel is in the tank, if the tank is full or at least half, then removing the bed is easier, if the tank is less then half full removing the tank is easier. It all depends on where your fuel level is to what is easier. The only other thing that I can think of is that if you do not have a second person to help you remove the bed, then dropping the tank with a Jack would be easier, so it all depends on what your situation is.

How do i take the bed off of my '97 isuzu hombre? i need to get to to the fuel tank to replace a fuel line that has split.

Usually you do not remove the bed, but rather drop the fuel tank. Everything should be accessable then.
But, the bed just unboltst and you release all of the wires. A bed often gets damaged during removal, so I suggest that you drop the tank and do your repairs from the underside. It will be faster and easier.

Need to replace fuel pump on 2004 crew cab dodge dakota. Do i need to drop fuel tank or take bed off?

Most people drop the fuel tank after it has been drained on fuel. I have removed the bed also, however I usually dont have the room or man power for this.

Need a new fuel pump

You will have to drop the tank to replace it. Sometimes its easier to remove the bed, especially if the tank has fuel in it.

Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is in the gas tank, the best way to do this is to get some friends and remove the bed from the frame. There is i believe 8 bolts that hold the bed to the frame, and don't forget to remove the hardware to the gas tank filler neck. Once the bed is off the frame, you can get to the fuel tank. Disconnect the wire harness and might as well replace the harness since there only $12.00 last i looked, disconnect the fuel line and return line. Remove the fuel pump retainer ring and lift up on the fuel pump sending unit. To install replace the rubber O ring and oil it before installing the new fuel pump sending unit. Install the fuel sending unit retaining ring, gas lines, new wire harness, and filler tube. Good lime also to check the hose to the EVAP since you can inspect them, look for any dry rot to the vacuum lines and replace if needed. Reinstall the bed and use lock tight to the bed bolts or replace them with stainless bolts. Good luck and hope this helps, oh and you might as well change the fuel filter while your have the bed off. The other way is to drop the gas tank which means draining the tank and raising the truck.

Replacing fuel filter

Unfortunatly most dakotas have an inline fuel filter, its located in the gas tank because there not supposed to need regular maintenance or changing. Basically you have to drop your gas tank to get the fuel filter out.
