Question about 2002 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo S

2002 beetle automatic transaxle

Just bought a 2002 beetle for my 16 year old daughter.when driven first thing in the morning it acts like it doesn't have enough fluid to shift it is an automatic..but as soon as it warms up its fine the rest of the day. figured it was low on fluid so dropped the trans-axle pan replaced the filter and gasket. placed about 3 liters of fluid in it ran it through the gears and checked level seemed I had enough. dripped out. But the next morning after it had sat all night .Drove the car it slips out of drive or looses pressure acts like its in neutral. but again once it warms up its fine for the rest of the day.I thought maybe as the fluid warmed up it expands and thats why it runs fine. so maybe I didnt put in enough fluid. does anyone know how many liters these take and if three liters isn't enough? or what in the world is going on with this thing.?

    thought I would just update ended up taking it to dealer about 70 miles away no one around here works on them they kept it overnight so they could get the morning effect, they called me that afternoon said the tranny needed to be replaced I asked how they came to this conclusion did they open it up and look at it? he said oh no we don't do that here , now mind you they are a volkswagon dealer and repair shop but said all they do is service these as in replace the fluid or flush or replace. he said the mechanics suggest a replacement at $3700.00. I told him no and a few choice words, I told him go ahead and do the flush. he said they did a complimentary fault check said the cruise control wasn't working and there was also a fault for the cadic converter.

    he said it was prob. caused because it not a volkswagon converter . I told him first the cruise. does work for I used it all they way down to the shop on the freeway if its not working they best fix it at no charge. second I know the converter is volkswagon because my head was laying under there at the tranny pan and I had a pretty good view of the stamp on it that was volkswagon. so from a starting bid of nearly $5000.00

    to fix all these so called problems, the total cost was $998 still too high in my book but fixed the problem. I wonder how many people choose to get the new tranny. the sad thing is they have you over a barrel I called all over town and no one touches these trannys but id like to know if a volkswagon shop wont even work on them then who does?

    I purchased a 2002 Turbo Volkswagen New Beetle and am having an identical issue with the auto transmission. The transmission intermittently acts like it pops into neutral, or acts like a manual transmission with a slipping clutch.

    Dealer says they dont fix, they replace, and to do the electronic controller and tranny at $4500. I like you said eat sand, tell me what is wrong before I pay.

    Are you saying you fixed the catalytic and it fixed the problem, or what actually fixed the problem for you or are you still battling it?

Ya still battling it . we flushed the tranny and it was fine for awhile but its just as bad if not worse. Volkswagon dealer gave me a huge run around and no answers. I thought i was getting stroked at $3500 for a new tranny but sounds like they realy want to nail you with $4500. No the catalytic replacement didnt fix the problem just a way to get more money out of me.
I didnt let the dealer replace the tranny and we drove it . it drives fine once its warmed up but first thing in the morning it slips. and it seems to be getting worse. I swung by a local shop not a dealer and he told me they have sensors . and may be a simple fix. but if not ya have to replace the tranny for its a sealed unit and they just cant be worked on. Possibly. You can try spraying some carb cleaner on the valve to make sure that it moves freely. Take off the air intake plastic assembly and you can see it.

My 1999 vw beetle won't start in snow

Old new beetle VW harness has contact resistance problems(vibration of wires) and needs to be recrimped the long wires(vibration can be stopped by silicone rubber anchoring). Cold weather make battery voltages low and needs recharged with handbrake on(headlamps off) 10 minutes warming engine up the whole winter.

Transmission slips when it warms up

Check fluid level in the transmission if it is an Automatic or the clutch may need replacing due to wear if it is a manual gearbox.

Their all Transaxles Codes

Being 11 years old,I think you just bought
a car, the previous owner got out of, because
you need a Transaxle Rebuild.

11 years is a long time for a transaxle

May be the second round for it.

Automatic? 6 years old. It is probably low on fluid and/or it needs serviced(oil/filter).

If its an automatic, it is the transmission. My wife's beetle did the same thing and we had to take it in for them to work on it. Luckily it was under warranty.

How to replace the front hood VW Ornament on a 2000 New Beetle?

To replace the logo, you can use olive oil to dissolve the glue, then pry it with a screwdriver. Then remove oil w/ soap and water. Then glue the new one w/ super glue.
For the radio, it could be the switch damaged inside. Remove the radio, open it and try to repair it. Or you can replace the whole radio with an used one.
