This is very puzzling. The build date should be clearly visible on the compliance plate which all registered motor vehicles in Oz must have. Then, what is on the rego paper, if any? The original information is supplied by the Toyota dealer when first sold.
If you can find the VIN number (that frame number isn't a VIN, which must be 17 characters in length, not less) on a compliance plate you can begin a trace through the Motor Registry in your State. It might be necessary to pay a search agency. If there is not a compliance plate, ask the Motor Registry what to do next.
A less reliable way to trace this history is to try the engine number, but that can of course be swapped. .
How to Find Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on a Toyota
Just about everyone has heard about a vehicle identification number (VIN), but do you know what it is and where to find it? A car's VIN number is the identifying code for a specific automobile. The VIN, at 17 characters long, serves as the car's fingerprint, as no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN. So now that you're the proud owner of a Toyota car, you may be wondering "How to find the vehicle identification number (VIN) on a Toyota? The VIN is located in multiple places in a Toyota, depending on the model type and year of your car. On passenger cars 1989 to current, the VIN is on a label located on the inside of the driver's doorOn trucks, vans and Land Cruisers 1989 to current, you can find your VIN on the label affixed to the doorjamb on the driver's side:For vehicles prior to 1989, the VIN is located on a plate, which can be found on or adjacent to the firewall within the engine compartment for passenger cars, trucks and Land Cruisers. On vans, the plate is located on the body, under a carpet flap directly below the front of the passenger seat.
You can also find your VIN on the insurance identification card issued by your insurance company
Ok, no problem. Copy down your VIN number and go to a decoding site.
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the string of 17 numbers and letters that an automobile manufacturer assigns to an individual vehicle. The VIN can reveal a number of things about a car, including its airbag type, country of origin, engine size, model year and trim level. The VIN also is key to car safety. By entering a VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's free VIN Look-up Tool, you can see whether a vehicle is subject to a recall. Typically, the VIN is stamped into a plate that's mounted on the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver-side door jamb. It's also stamped on the engine's firewall.
On the centre of the bulkhead on a metal plate held by two silver rivets. Models prior to 1995 have a VIN repeat on a metal plate positioned on the underside of the bonnet.
Later models may be on the right hand B pillar
On some Colt Cabriolet models: The VIN plate is located on the left hand front floor pan under seat. Stamped Number
Stamped on the offside of the bulkhead with Mitsubishi logo security marks.on later models chassis number may be under a plastic inspection panel towards the top of the bulkhead/firewall
On some Cabriolet models:Right hand floor pan under drivers seat.
The VIN is visible from the windshield on the driver's side on a metal tab. The number contains information such as paint color, trim level, manufacture date, engine type, etc. Tge VIN is stamped on various other locations - depending on the year, make and model of the car.
There should be a square aluminium "Build Plate" (size of cigarette packet?) mounted somewhere on the firewall - this plate will have build information such as Chassis Number, Engine Number, Transmission Number etc, etc.
If you cannot locate this plate, then check the 'cc rating' of your engine listed on your registration/MOT papers, or compare to these two engine types (your vehicle will have one or the other):
BJ 14 - 1,290 cc
B3 14 - 1,324 cc
Your 'full' engine number will be stamped on the engine block (or may also be recorded on your registration or Warrant/MOT papers).
Hope this helps,

These numbers Engine and Chassis/VIN number should be written on the identification plate. This plate is located on the inside of the engine bay. It is attached up the rear of the engine bay, right hand side on the firewall. Just in front of the driver in a right hand drive vehicle, in front of the passenger on a l/h drive vehicle.
the early models had the fuel filter mounted in the engine bay against the firewall. follow the fuel lines from the motor to the firewall. if there is no filter there then it is the late model and the filter is part of the fuel sender unit, this is mounted in the fuel tank and includes the fuel pump. this type is difficult to replace, and sometimes requires replacment of the entire sender unit.
Best way to tell is to call a nissan spare parts dept witn you VIN number and ask if this filter is replacable.
Hi PJ, Is this the original sound system for the vehicle? if it is then contact your local Mitsubishi dealer with your Vin Number and Registration Document/title they will have it on file.
