Question about 1984 Pontiac Fiero

1 Answer

1984 FIERO 4 CYL STICK. had a aftermarket elec temp gauge mounted on console, replaced with a mech temp gauge. after replacing temp gauge is when the fuel gauge messed up. now when you turn on the key or start it the gauge goes past the full mafk an stays there.NO wires to the dash were touched. the light wires on the gauge are the same ones used on the old aftermarket gauge.. what could have happened? The gas gauge worked fine before. the reason I change the temp gauge was the sending unit went bad an I couldnt get another one so I bought the mech type gauge...HOW do I test to find the problem an fix it. My son in law is giving this car to his daughter to drive, she just got her license (not wise) please help figure this one out THANK YOU

I assume you replaced the temperature sending unit when you installed the aftermarket gauge? You need to put the proper sending unit back in for the OEM gauge to work.

You can find a sending unit here (and a gauge if needed):

Hope this helps

Fiero oil

On some 4 cyl models, the oil filter is in the bottom of the oil pan. It is a large round metal plate with a nut in the middle.
Removing the filter also drains the oil. It can be very messy.

I have a 84 potiac fiero 4 cyl and the multi port injector wont spray when trying to start. I tested it with two wires to the batery and it works, but the wires coming out of the harness wont turn the...

Be careful putting 12 volts to the injector harness,it will burn the e c m out.The module in the distributor, and the pickup coil work together to pulse the injector and energize the coil. The ignition module is most likely the problem, but the pickup coil in the distributor, would be my second choice in the two.See if it has spark,or spray a little bit of starting fluid in the intake, not much,if it fires, and tries to run, replace the module, and the pickup coil.If it has no spark, the module replacement will be all that is needed.

Too much fuel pumped into the carb. What to do?...adjust?...set?

The idle air control valve may be at fault, also the throttle position sensor may be telling the engine th wrong information and sending too much fuel, a couple other ideas come to mind but I not an expert. A faulty injector is one of them.....I another idea that may help as well: Vacuum Leak: The ECM will try to compensate for leaks up to a certain size. This will cause the ECM to compensate and possible send too much fuel to the engine...???? Good Luck
