If the noise is there all the time,I would suspect the timing chain

All Frontiers,Exterra and Pathfinders,2004 thru Nov 2009 have that problem

There is a new Borg Warner chain out, to fix that,of coarse any chain guide issues and oil activated tensioners, should be checked out or replaced

I took my 2005 Chev. Malibu in for an oil change and now it is making a loud noise from the engine. they say its the water pump? is that possible?

  • Hi, I can help.
  • When your water pump goes bad it will begin to grind. I had one I let got far to long and it sounded deafening when I opened the hood. You can open your hood and listen and see for yourself. The water pump is on the belt line, left side under the hood, last pulley toward the rear.
  • Now if your asking can an oil change effect the water pump? No, not at all. Water pumps go sporadically.
  • It would be odd that you heard no noises before the oil change and now the water pump is loud enough to take notice after the oil change. The bearings usually go a little slower than that.

  • I would be interested in some more of the details to this. And what your overall concerns are. I'd be happy to further. help. Otherwise get a second opinion on your cars condition.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

I have a 100k on my 1992 wrangler i have a little lifter noise

If you have an inline 6, 100K is nothing! Lifter noise can be due to low oil pressure. if pressure is good, it can be from cam wear, lifter being sticky inside, or a rocker pivot being a little worn. Most just get a bit sticky (internal hydraulic plunger inside a lifter or two). To fix that I generally change the oil to a good synthetic, add lucas additive or marvel oil and just give it some time to dissolve the gunk. It took time to get that way so don't expect the tapping to go away instantly...Most times it will begin to lessen in a day or two or up to a few weeks.

My 1996 mercedes makes a rattling noise in the front.......

Could be a number of things;
I would go with the recent changes that took place, rim changed? loose lug nuts on the tire?
-Strut loose or worn.
-worn ball joints.
-Caliper pins, or brake worn.
-CV joints may need to be replaced.
-loose parts, fender, hood, fan shroud, battery box.
I could go on.
Should change oil at least every 5,000 kms.

I have a 1996 Ford Ranger with the 3.0L V6. it has about 126,000 miles. on the way home from school on Friday i noticed that my oil pressure gauge was looking a little bit lower than normal. just a little...

make sure the oil is full. start engine with hood up stand outside of truck and lisen for any knocking or irregular noise. if noise is heard then shut truck off and you will probabley need a new oil pump but if no noise is heard try changing the oil sending unit. the oil sending unit is the switch that tells the gage what pressure to read. its located near rear of engine passenger side, should be a single wire connector black in color. a easy way to look for it is to buy the switch then open the hood and look for it using the new one as a guide
