Cooling fan is acting strange car is heating some when idling how can I trouble shoot or fix

It is normal for a temperature gauge to fluctuate when the car idles, you will notice 20 to 50 degrees bounce. As long as it is not going into the red or blowing steam don't worry about it.

Check list for answers to my Montero overheating...

Methods to trouble shoot
(1) check thermostat device. if thermostat is stuck - not working half the water used in cooling system is missing once engine heats up which can lead to over heating. (may need mechanic to check this)
(2) check radiator has water in it . if it is low there may be a leak in cooling system somewhere check rubber hose and radiator are not leaking.
(3) check fan belt is engaging fan in front of radiator
(4) if electric fan check if fan activates once car has heated up
(5) check oil level of engine on dip stick. If low oil add some oil and re check oil dip stick. DO NOT PUT whole oil pack in (don't laugh I know someone who did this and has to go to mechanic and get oil removed)
(6) if rubber hoses blow off connectors then you may have a broken head gasket seal. A pressure test of the radiator will confirm this.
(7) Possible water pump failure. Check by taking cap off radiator and run engine see if water is flowing in radiator and test if water is heating up in the radiator. Remember to put cap back on radiator when finishing test.
(8) check if bubbles or oil are in radiator water this could indicate a blown head gasket problem also.

I have a 1990 acura i integra and when i go thru a drive thru my car says its overheating but as soon as i drive away the temp gauge shoots roght back dow to normal what could be causing this. noww the...

Sounds like you have a bad thermostat that needs replacing or an air pocket in the cooling system. Does you cooling fan also come on when it's hot? If it does then it is for sure one of the two above and if the fan doesn't come on then you may need to replace it.

Car is overheating while idling.

Your radiator fan is probably failed. Pop open hood, watch temp rise, once past "normal " level teh fan should turn on. If not, you need to trouble shoot the rad fan. There should be heavy duty fuses and relays under the hood in an electrical distribution box. You should consult the owners manual or chart on the box lid. Of course the fan maybe bad itself. You can also try - turn on the AC, this will activate the 2nd (booster) fan, and should help prevent serious overheating but wont fix the underlying problem.
Good luck

2005 chevy equinox do my radiator and condensor

Hello: You may have a cooling fan(s) problem. Start the truck, turn the a/c on max, both fan and a/c control. Open hood the cooling fan(s) should be running. If not then you will need hands on trouble shooting. It could be fan(s) motor(s), relays, relay control, ie PCM, wiring, fuse etc. Systematic hands 0n trouble shooting will be needed with a upscale scan tool.

Once cooling fan comes on it wont turn off until you turn key off

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the problem can be on the cooling fan sensor. If the sensor is faulty issues like this occur. I strongly suggest that you have it replaced to resolve the problem.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

My car overheated the other day bc i was in stopped traffic for about 45 min to an hour i put anti freeze in it and hasent overheated since what could be the problem??

It sounds like you put your cooling system to the test.
If you have an older car, it may be that the cooling system needs to be flushed to improve the cooling. It could be worn impellers on your water pump which could make it hard to keep the coolant moving fast enough to keep things cool.
You could also have a Thermostat that stuck for a while. If your drive belt for your water pump is worn or the idler tension is low, then the water pump may not have spun efficiently. It could have also been a malfunction with your cooling fan you see cooling systems can be compex to trouble shoot.

I hope this has helped more than confused

How do I trouble shoot overheating on 1996 2.4 chevy cavalier The cooling fan does not turn when temp is above 195 degrees

check your fuses on your fan.the fuses are located on the drivers side of the dash you will need to open the door for you to access them. if there is a blown fuse replace it and see if this fixes your problem. if it does and you are still over heating turn the heat on full blast and see if the temp goes down if so than you need to replace the thermostat. if there are no fuses blown than you need to check the plug on the fan unit to make sure it has not come disconnected.
