Check the bottom of the radiator for a drain plug. also, most auto parts stores sell drain kits that install a flush/drain valve onto a heater hose.

First lift the front of your car on oil change ramps, or jack stands.
The drain plug is located at the front of the car, on the driver's side, on other side of radiator lower hose.. It's a vertical plug, but with no access. Some people drill a 1 1/2 hole, up through the plastic underling, using a wood drill bit, and access it with pliers. We do not do that. We just remove the lover hose from the radiator. Collect the used coolant in a bucket.
Reconnect the lower radiator hose, fill the radiator and with water and run engine for 2 minutes. Flush the water and repeat this process 3 up to 4 times, till the discharge will be clear. Be aware, the discharge will get warm and hot. Do not burn your hands.
Repeat the process one more time with distilled water. Tap water has chlorine and might corrode the radiator. Connect the lower radiator and secure the clamps in the right position. It is a good idea to replace the thermostat while flushing the cooling system. Now you are half way, but you have a decision to make. What antifreeze to use.

On the back you have to read directions:
Step 1 Drain. Step 2 Flush. Step 3 Fill.
Recommended to ad 30% volume distilled water to 70% volume Antifreeze. If you flush the system and rinse with water you must add only 30% water to the antifreeze. There is more water trapped inside the engine compartment, because the thermostat is closed. Make sure to have a coolant density tester. When you finish one of 5 balls must sink, that indicates that you reached 50/50 strength. That means 50% Prestone and 50% Water, which will provide to your car a -34F degree FREEZE-UP Protection , and +265F degree BOILOVER protection. Make sure to open bleeding valve to discharge air pockets from the cooling system. Add coolant.The next day, while engine is cold open the radiator cap, and test the strength of coolant. If it is not quite right, then siphon coolant from the radiator and add antifreeze, or distilled water as necessary. Start the Engine. Untwist the coolant bleeding nipple. If there will be a jet or stream of coolant, that means the water pump is working and is O.K., and there are not air pocket left in the cooling system. Good Luck.

2006 Chevy trail blazer. Keeps getting hot. Anti-freeze is full, overflow container is half full. Every time I turn it off can hear fluid in radiator boiling and bubbling?


Pam are you sure it's boiling? If the Antifreeze is boiling I'd think you'd see steam coming out of your reservoir as the water expands into the reservoir, but you didn't say you see anything like that.
Of course engines get hot, that's why we have the cooling systems but it doesn't sound like it's "boiling" to me with no signs of visible steam unless your antifreeze level is really low?

If it's really boiling, and you antifreeze level is good, then your reservoir should be getting filled up with expanded hot water that goes into it to catch it when it expands.

If the water isn't going into the reservoir, then maybe your antifreeze level in the radiator is too low and you need to add antifreeze?

Best to fill the radiator with the engine cooled down. If you ever have to open the radiator when it's hot, NEVER open it with your bare hand as you could get scolded with boiling water. Instead use a big thick towel to remove the radiator cap off a hot engine. Again, if you can, just wait until the engine cools then open the radiator cap.

With the engine cool, you can fill the radiator with a 50/50 antifreeze mix. The 50/50 mix come premixed 50 percent water, and 50 percent antifreeze. So you can throw that stuff straight into the radiator.

Non mixed antifreeze needs to be mixed 50/50. Some people use 50 percent distilled water when they mix it because distilled water doesn't have the minerals in it that may get stuck in your radiator. That's being a bit picky about it though. Tap water works fine in a pinch. The other 50 percent is antifreeze. You can mix it right in the radiator too, put in a measured amount of the antifreeze, followed by the same measured amount of water. The water pump will mix it all together when you run the engine.

Put the cap back on and run the engine and if/when the water "boils" it should go into your reservoir. If it does boil in go in the reservoir then yes...your engine is getting hot and the antifreeze is boiling.

When the antifreeze boils, it's probably because your thermostat is stuck closed. That means the thermostat isn't letting water circulate through the radiator to get cooled. Thermostats are cheap...no more than $30 I'd say for most cars. Changing them is pretty easy too as they are usually right at the top of the engine. A mechanic may charge $100 to change it....but it's an easy job on most vehicles requiring just a couple sockets/socket wrench.

How do i flush and replace radiator with anti-freeze ?


Drain the old antifreeze. Add straight water and a chemical flushing agent from a parts store, and follow the instructions for using the flush. Then drain again, and replace the radiator and use a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water (distilled water, preferably-it is cheap) to fill up the cooling system. Leave the radiator cap loose, and start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature-the upper hose will be hot after the thermostat is opened, and the coolant level will drop some and need topping up.

It's a good idea to also change the thermostat while you are changing the radiator. If you are not replacing the radiator itself, but a lot of brown rust drains out, then take the radiator off and turn it upside down and flush out good with a water hose.

Changing aNTIFREEZE IN TUNDRA


Remove radiator cap.Remove radiator bung from bottom of radiator and drain into container.Replace bung.Replace new 50/50 water/antifreeze mix.Turn interior heater up to max with fan on lowest setting.Run vehicle until hot, topping up radiator as required.Replace radiator cap when bubbling ceases. Road test vehicle, return and recheck level after cooling down period.Recheck level over the next few days and check for any new signs of leakage in system.(Fresh introduction of antifreeze can reduce the tension of the water molecules and can produce new leaks)

Engine overheat changed water pump thermastat radeatorfan temp sensor bottom radeator hose what else could it be


blown head gasket,check oil for water in oil,gray milky look,check antifreeze in radiator for color,check exhaust for white smoke or water-coolant if its going out exhaust gasket blown inbetween cylinders,see if pushing antifreeze out of radiator etc.check radiator for leaks pressure test it,cap on radiator bad?

How many gal of antifreeze should i put in the coolant system? I put 2 gal in as there was little left in the system. I went to drive the truck and within 15 min the truck was over heating. The antifreeze...


Was it knocking in the radiator when it over heated if so you most likely got an air lock in the system by pouring the new antifreeze in to fast. You need to add it real slow and once you think the radiator is full start the truck and let it warm up and leave the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens and then add more antifreeze because when the stat opens the level will go lower. Once you are sure the antifreeze is circulating an full then you can go drive the truck. Some people use a 50 percent mix of antifreeze to water but I always use 100 percent antifreeze it runs cooler.

Over heating i have water in the radiator do i have to put some radiator fluid in so it wont over heat?


Hi,
You need to check that the water is flowing first, with the engine cold remove the radiator cap and start the engine let it run until it gets warm, once it is warm leave it going until you can see the water flowing. If you can't see it flowing after 10-15 mins of the engine running then you will need to replace the thermostat.
If the water isn't flowing then you have a problem with the water pump and you will need to replace this.

Best way to change coolant in 2003 sierra


With engine cold, remove radiator cap. At bottom of radiator on left side (as you stand in fronof truck), there is a plastic drain plug that screws into the radiator. This plug does not look like a bottle cap, rather it looks like a large, raised tab. Turn counterclockwise to remove. Have a large pan under the truck at this location, or have the truck parked on the grass. Allow to drain completely. Dispose of the old antifreeze and do let children or pets drink it; it is deadly poison. If you want to do this right, replace the plug, refill the radiator with water only, replace the radiator cap, start engine and let run until opwerating temperature is reached (about 20 minutes), then turn engine off, let cool completely, and repeat the drain procedure. This will more thoroughly remove the old antifreeze from the system. Now refill the radiator with the proper mixture of new antifreeze and water, run engine to proper operating temperature. turn off engine and let cool completely. Add additional water and antifreeze into the coolant overflow bottle if necessary. After changing antifreeze, you may need to add more again after couple of days.

At the bottom of the radiator there is a plastic knob this is the petcock drain plug it can be hard to see and turn so you may need to jack up the front of the car a little to crawl under the front and look at the bottom of the radiator but if you can reach it from the top and turn it with a pair of pliers do so that way this will allow you to drain the radiator, remove the radiator cap if it has one to allow air to pass through radiator, if it has no radiator cap remove the cap on the radiator expansion reserve tank, after all antifreeze is drained turn petcock drain plug back in till tight then refill raidiator with 50% water 50% anti freeze mixture, start car and top off antifreeze run the car or drive for ten minutes then top off antifreeze.

Changing my antifreeze


i guess the easiest way is to take the bottom radiator hose off when the engine is cold put a hose in the top of the radiator flush any dirty water out then reconnect the hose put the right amount of anti-freeze in (will tell you on the bottle) fill the radiator with water but also have a hose or bucket of water handy because the water level will drop when the motor gets hot when this happens just fill with water but don't waste time
