1987 6.9 diesel. Why did it jerk a little bit then idle really high without any acceleration?

I used to have the same year truck. Usually a diesel is more simple and mechanical versus electronic ignition and controls. My initial thought is a vacuum leak possibly trouble in the mechanical vacuum pump. But grinding when going to Park is a new one to me, unless transmission is masking noise when in gear.

About all I can suggest is to use a water spray bottle and spray around the vacuum pump, engine seams and even what you might find by the transmission. (While the engine is running.)

Also some 4x4 hubs and transfer cases use Vacuum to work. A vacuum line leak could jam a gear positioner in between 2 settings and cause grinding of gears.

Hi there
A bad or worn water pump ,you will either boil the engine water system or loose water or coolant while driving and when you stopped or water [temp] light will come on when it gets down in the header tank,AND
you will hear the grinding noise as soon as you start the engine and the water pump pulley will move about when running and water will start leaking .
Let me know how you go.

How do i tell if waterpump is bad the water is evporating everyday

    • 1 Park your car overnight and put a large white piece of paper underneith your car. In the morning check the paper. If the paper is wet with liquid, you could have a water pump leak.
    • 2 If the paper has green (in most cases) fluid on it, there is a good chance your vehicle is leaking coolant (sometimes refered to as "water"). In many cases, when you are leaking coolant it could be coming from the water pump.
    • 3 Turn the engine off and open the hood.
    • 4 Locate the water pump pulley. The pulley is the round part that the belt is attached to. To find it, look for the belts. You will see more than one pulley. Your car will have an alternator with a pulley and perhaps an air conditioner, power steering and smog pump pulleys. If you are unsure, ask your mechanic to point out the water pump pulley.
    • 5 Grab opposite ends of the round pulley and check for "play" (looseness): Try to rock it back and forth. There should be no give. If there is, the bearings are going and it's time to replace the water pump. By the time you can feel play in the water pump pulley, you may also be able to hear the bad bearing when the engine is running - there may be a low-pitched grinding noise coming from the water pump pulley.
    • 6 Visually check the water pump (it's located behind the pulley) for signs of a coolant leak. If the water pump gasket is leaking, it must be replaced. This is a good time to get a new water pump, too, unless it was just recently replaced.
