Manual Gearbox For the past month or so, my car has been grinding into second gear when I shift from first gear @ 4,000 RPM or above. The transition from 1st to 2nd gear has becoming progressively worse. Today (6/15/08), the vehicle ill no longer stay in second gear. When I shift down to second, it pops into neutral resulting in me reving the engine. Any ideas as to what this could be? Luckily, my warranty still has just under 3k miles left on it and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is a powertrain issue which should be covered. Thank you for reviewing my posting. Mike

When i shift into third the gears grind.. why?

sounds like the syncromesh has gone in the gearbox. If you dont want them to grind, you,ll have to double declutch. I f you cant do this, get a new gearbox.

Car not shifting into second gear

If the car is grinding when going into reverse, you need to have the clutch bled or repaired.

If it goes into reverse with out grinding, I am sorry to tell you your problem is internal to the gearbox. Bad or damaged Syncro

Good luck

2nd gear crunch

first of all you shouldn't be reving that high to change gears. that's too high. secondly if it's grinding only during the change from 1st to 2nd gear you may have a problem with the gears not being aligned anymore...ie synchronizers worn out, bearings worn out, etc. take to reputable transmission shop to get it diagnosed and repaired. it sounds like the synchronizers are a problem there. and you may have metal in your fluid now that it's been grinding which will affect the rest of the transmission. if you are speed shifting as in racing, you are not doing your transmission any good. you probably don't have a transmission built to do that if it's the original factory tranny... meaning you did a major NO NO to your tranny and are tearing it up speed shifting when it isn't built for racing.
