Need to retrieve the engine codes that are stored on the computer using an obd-II compliant scanner that would work with all vehicles sold in the U.S. from 1996 and above.

After that, the appropriate parts may be changed to improve driveability issues of the vehicle.

If the vehicle has no spark and/or no fuel when this happens, then a code is likely to have been stored.

The symptoms you describe could be attributable to a ckp or crankshaft position sensor going bad, or a bad ignition system.

Another problem found on the Lincolns and Fords and even GM cars is that the Mass Air Flow Sensor gets bumped and malfunctions.

If the car is idling and the technician bumps the MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor and the car stalls or shuts off, then the technician found the problem with the stalling and shutoff condition.

    Good luck on this repair.

Ask your local technician to set up a fuel gauge pressure monitor so you can track it while your driving. Ask him what the normal range is so you will know when it falls below. Document it and let your Tech know. It sounds like your fuel pump is loosing Pressure.

Hi Kathleen, I'm glad to help!

Kathleen, I can tell you this because I work at a dealer myself and through the years when a problem comes in like yours and we can't find anything wrong its because whatever is causing the issue is not setting a code. There is only a few things that can cause a problem like yours and not set a code. (1) Fuel pumps can cause intermittent problem but will never set a code. After running for a while they will simply stop working but then after sitting a while will cool down and work fine again. (2) Exhaust issues. After the exhaust system has a lot of years and miles on it, the debris inside it can restrict the air flow and in some cases cause the vehicle to die and run poorly after a restart, but after sitting awhile the debris falls back down and the vehicle runs fine again until it happens again. NOTE: I'm not saying that either of these is your problem BUT, you have to start somewhere. Your only other option would be to let it die until the check engine light come on and then you'll know for sure it has set a code. After it sets a code then the dealer should be able to find your problem. The problem is that if its one of the issues I mentioned it will never set a code. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Kathleen.

Quits running periodically. Cranks over but will not start. Let it sit for 15 minutes, it starts. I have had it towed twice to the repair shop and they could not find anything wrong. I take it home,...

I would check to see if the catalyic converter is clogged. Drop the tail pipe at the manifold. Start and drive it for a block you will be able to tell real quick. It should run smooth and have good power. It will just be noisy. Or you could have coil problems.

Start with changing the fuel filter. If that doesn't do it, then change the fuel pump.
