Question about Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

My CE light is on. The code is PO420. It is a 2002 Corolla. Smog is due. Two years ago, the same thing happened. I bought a scanner, cleared the light. Took it to smog. Passed. But this year, I cleared the light, it kept. What should I do? Is it true that my car can't get smogged if the light is on? Is it true that even if I had the problem fixed, cleared the light, I can't take the car to smog until the car had gone through 40 start cycles until all the monitors are ready? I have heard that sometimes no matter what you do, the CE lights kept coming back. I would really hate that. Thank you.

The P0420 is for the catalyric converter, you'll have to have it replaced. It will fail the test as long as the light is on. Clearing the code information also clears the monitor infor, to pass the monitors required you'll have to put some miles on it in both city and highway driving, not all monitors may be required so check with your local smog station which ones have to pass.

bad catalytic converter is last resort if you ask me. if the car fails its usually for a reason. either with too much gas entering the system due to being run way too rich, or too much air coming into the system due to being running to lean. could also be running the wrong fuel. 1) check spark plugs. check gap with owners manaul or manufacturers specs. also, while spark plugs are out see if there's any fuel on them by smelling. if you smell fuel, this is and indication the injector for that cylinder is being held on for some reason, either leaking or bad driver etc. should still be a tan color. if plugs ok, check air filter. ive seen where a plugged air filter will allow little air to get in causing a rich burn and in couple instances, no starts. also while monitoring sensors with scanner, see operation of oxygen sensors. a bad o2 sensor could also trigger a cat converter code as well. if all is good that way, then you can still see if the converter is bad with the scanner. if you see the post o2 sensor not switching like it should, and pre-cat o2 sensor changing, then its likely, that the cat itself is in fact bad. that should also affect power as in having severe loss of power under load, being hard accel like up a hill, but run good at there are a few things to consider before condeming the catconverter.

As I stated in my original reply the P0420 is very specific to a catalytic converter inefficiency, no other codes were mentioned, O2 sensors, a/f ratio sensors and lean conditions would show other codes, so looking for other reasons is a waste of time and money, the cat can actually be tested by connecting a diagnostic tool that is capable of running a monitor on the cat's performance

If the code has cleared on its own then you need to disconnect the battery and re-connect it. This will clear the codes out of the memory. If you don't want to do this you can go to an auto parts strore and have them hook the little computer up to your car and they can clear out the code as well.

Hello there! Your tail lights could be out due to several factors such as the bulb being burnt out or the electrical connections got tangled up. Either way you need to get those fixed or you'll be cited for a violation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not passing smog, no code or engine light

Its going to be tough to find the problem without access to a 4 gas machine. Especially if there are no trouble codes in the computer.
If the fuel mixture is rich it should set a code for one or both O2 sensors. Same thing if the EGR is not working, etc.
One thing that could cause problems is the thermostat not getting the engine up to normal temp.

I'm barely failing smog due to high hydrocarbons.

Hi Larry, I your position I believe I would take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and then check the read outs. There could be a problem with any one of a number of sensors but I believe you'll end up with all odds pointing at the cat. Regards John

How to read diagnostic trouble codes for a dodge avenger. the smog technion failed my smog due to system malfution light obd2 not ready?

Was the light on or did the tech say the system was not ready? They can be two different things.

A light would need to get scanned or a code reader attached to the car may do it. Most auto part stores will hook up a code reader for free and let you know what codes are present.

If the light was not on but it stated system not ready on the smog machine that can be due to the battery being disconnected. Its basically saying that the computer needs to go through drive cycles so it can test the its systems.

Battery was disconntected to replace a connector now computer is 'not ready' and failed emissions test. driven it over 600 miles since then. Tried to follow steps to complete a 'drive...

Do you have a service engine light on or does the smog station tell you that the monitors are set?
A drive cycle won't clear a service engine light if the reason for it was not fixed. Normally a drive cycle or a 25 or so mile drive will be enough for the PCM to run through its test, and if all is well, clear the monitors.
Now some shop scanners and code readers can clear the monitors. Actron is one of the code readers that I know of that will clear monitors (the newer models. older ones did not). They are about $75 for the basic code reader and may be a worthwhile investment for the do it yourselfer.
Auto Zones also have code readers and if theirs is capable may do it for you. Though if you're in California I have heard they don't do that any longer due to people getting codes cleared just before a smog test without fixing the issue first.
