Question about Toyota Corolla
The P0420 is for the catalyric converter, you'll have to have it replaced. It will fail the test as long as the light is on. Clearing the code information also clears the monitor infor, to pass the monitors required you'll have to put some miles on it in both city and highway driving, not all monitors may be required so check with your local smog station which ones have to pass.

SOURCE: My 1981 Toyota Corolla won't
A Vehicle This Old Must have Very High Millage, And it is Possible that there is NORMAL wear that has taken place that Unfortunatly ONLY a NEW or Newer Engine Will solve this Problem. IF ALL OTHER OPTIONS IN REPAIR HAVE BEEN EXHAUSTED--Such as Major tune up Valve adjustment - Emision system inspected and CLEARED of Defects , The Only FIX is A New Engine. As Part of my Job for some 25 + years I Have had to be the Bearer of BAD NEWS such as this, Good Luck 1981 toy Cor Millage is????

If the code has cleared on its own then you need to disconnect the battery and re-connect it. This will clear the codes out of the memory. If you don't want to do this you can go to an auto parts strore and have them hook the little computer up to your car and they can clear out the code as well.

SOURCE: failed smog test
trade it in on the scrappage scheme against a new one .or take it to an authorised garage for emmisions ,cant just point a finger at a certain component and say change that .Sorry but without the right equipment i would only be making educated guesses .What condition is the air filter in ---did you clean it before you went for the test

I have a 1977 chevy c10 truck with a small block 400. I just moved to Phoenix Arizona and it has no smog. Will I need to add anything to it to pass emissions?
