This is a very common problem with the 05-09 Tacoma. The console is very prone to internal failure. I offer a reasonable repair service with a lifetime guarantee, check it out: www.autoclockrepair.com
There is a bunch of useful info there. Drop me an email if you have questions, thanks!
Sorry to hear your compass and ambient temp display isn't working. Unfortunately, this is a common issue with the '05 to '09 Tacomas. It is possible to temporarily fix it yourself (search google for forums), however the repair doesn't last long due to previous oxidation of the components.
My company repairs these in a manner that precludes the problem from happening again (we use new components, and a heatsink to prevent debonding). Repair includes a one year warranty on our work!

Are your cruise control, dome, and tail lights also out? If so then it
is a fuse. If not then the control unit has gone bad internally. You may
be able to get it fixed under your warranty.
If it is not covered by your warranty, check out

The overhead console is quite prone to internal failure. Dim, intermittent, or dead displays are a common symptom of an internal failure. We offer a reasonable repair service with a lifetime guarantee. Check it out: www.autoclockrepair.com
SOURCE: what are the steps to fix the compass/thermometer
'05 - '09 Tacoma temp and compass gauge displays commonly 'burn out' due to component failure on the circuit board; this is not due to a fuse, and the dealership charges $200 or more for the new part.
However, we permanently fix the problem using all new components and a lead wire underlayment as a heatsink. See our site for more info: http://www.toyotatacomacompassrepair.com
