Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Problems: while driving 60 mph car will shut off turn back on and backfire. basically it will shut off and be a pain to get going again all while driving at fast speeds Solutions: replaced O2 sensor(oldest), crank sensor, fuel filter (most recent) and about 6 computers (literally) along with 2 cat converter and mufflers. I have researced online and found that it was possibly a short in the wiring i mentioned this to the "Jeep Specialists" and they didnt acknowledge that would even be a cause. i also mentioned the sensor that is attached to the intake again no positive feedback . all to just have the same problem come back in a month to 3 months sometimes sooner. in regards to the computer i have found that sometimes when the harness is ziptied it will run as well as starting it up i can wiggle the cable sometimes and have a friend start it up. codes: usually gives an ignition code which has ment that the computer is bad. or thats what i have been told. I find it impossible that 6 computers were faulty and that is the problem. something has to be making the computer short or causing the engine not to recieve fuel and ignite it and then suddenly ignite it to cause a backfire. h hope this will help thanks

Backfire at 60 to 70 mph

Check for bad fuel, but it sounds like it might be spark plugs or spark plug wires breaking down and cross firing or missing. If it is electrical you should have a rougher idle also.

Always check for spark, fuel and compression. On a Ford product, always check the inertia switch. It's on the left fender apron according to the book.

2003 honda element - it lost power while driving about 60 mph and then turned to come home.. going about 15 mph and lost power and started jerking - it did not die and the electrical was working - battery...

You should start with the basics, are you getting fuel and air to the engine and spark at the plugs? Is the battery being charged? When did you last change the fuel filter? Does the car still start and run?

I would really have that exhaust checked again, as well as have mechanic put fuel pressure gauge on & drive it up to that speed and see what happens fuel pressure wise. With exhaust, it's not only cat converter that could be causing reduced flow.

Normally this sort of scenario indicates a sticking or broken EGR valve and/or a serious vacuum leak. Either of these will cause the problem you described.

Hope this helps you....
