With the switch in the center position and the dimmer turned either to the right or left the interior light will not come when the door is open the light will work when turned on manually

If this doesn't work for any of the doors check the selector on the light itself. As I understand it the light design in the 2008 is essentially the same as the 2005 and the 2005 actually has 3 positions. 1 is manual on, 1 is off and 1 for door activation. If the switch on the overhead light is set to off the door activators don't work. Obviously if the light is set to manual on the door activators are not an issue as the light is already on. Lastly, the security system could be interfering with the light as well since that will kill the interior lights when activated or turns them on when the alarm is deactivated, at least in the 2005 it does anyway.

Interior Lighting The interior lamp system is separated into 2 subsystems: the interior lamp subsystem and the on-demand lamp subsystem. The dome light and front map light on-demand lamps are also part of the interior lamp subsystem.
An on-demand interior lamp will only illuminate when its specific switch is activated. On-demand lamps consist of the front map light and the dome light.
The instrument cluster illuminates the interior lamps when any door is ajar, when an unlock signal is received by the vehicle security module (if equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE) or the dimmer switch is rotated to the ON position. The instrument cluster will turn off the interior lamps when all doors are closed, the vehicle security module (if equipped with RKE) receives a lock signal, 25 seconds have elapsed since the illuminated entry feature was activated, or the dimmer switch is rotated to the OFF position.
The vehicle is also equipped with a battery saver feature. The battery saver feature provides automatic shutoff of the demand lamps, courtesy lamps, and the warning chimes after a specific period of time has elapsed in order to save battery power.

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN, ISO or UBP circuits fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 .
    • No response/not equipped for instrument cluster, refer to Section 413-01 .
    • No response/not equipped for vehicle security module, refer to Section 419-10 .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster.
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the vehicle security module.
  1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index or the Vehicle Security Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.

    Pinpoint Test A: The Interior Lamps Are Inoperative
    Normal Operation On vehicles equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE), the door ajar switches are hardwired to the vehicle security module. The vehicle security module monitors the status of all door ajar switches, and when a door is opened, transmits a dome lamp ON signal to the instrument cluster through UART based protocol (UBP) circuit 1906 (PK), indicating a door has been opened. When the instrument cluster receives the dome lamp ON signal from the vehicle security module, the instrument cluster energizes the interior lamp circuits, which illuminates the interior lamps and, if equipped, the puddle lamps in the exterior mirrors.
    On vehicles without RKE, the door ajar switches are hardwired to the instrument cluster. When the driver or passenger door is opened, the instrument cluster receives a ground signal from the driver door ajar switch through circuit 344 (BK/YE), or from the passenger door ajar switch through circuit 345 (BK/PK), and the instrument cluster energizes the interior lamp circuits, causing the interior lamps to illuminate.
    The dimmer control switch can be used to turn the interior lamps ON or OFF when the doors are closed. The interior lamp defeat switch can be used to turn the interior lamps OFF when the doors are open.

    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220b-9, circuit 3049 (BK/LG), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    Yes
    GO to A4 .

    No
    VERIFY the central junction box (CJB) fuse 21 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. A4 CHECK INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a-17, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    Yes
    GO to A5 .

    No
    REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. A5 CHECK CIRCUIT 53 (BK/LB) FOR AN OPEN
    • NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair circuit 53 (BK/LB) for a short to ground.

    • Do the interior lamps operate?
    Yes
    INSTALL a new dimmer control switch. REFER to Section 417-01 . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No
    GO to A7 . A7 CHECK CIRCUIT 402 (OG/LG) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a-12, circuit 402 (OG/LG), harness side and the dimmer control switch C205b-2, circuit 402 (OG/LG), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    Yes
    GO to A8 .

    No
    REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. A8 CHECK DIMMER CONTROL SWITCH CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Measure the resistance between the dimmer control switch C205b-4, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

The interior lamps consists of two groups, lamps that can not be dimmed and lamps that can be dimmed. This first group consists of lamps that may not be dimmed. This includes those lamps that may be manually turned on by placing the interior lamp switch to the DOME position, or by opening a door or a compartment:
• Door courtesy lamps
• Footwell courtesy lamps
• Instrument panel (I/P) compartment lamp
• Overhead console courtesy lamps
• Reading courtesy lamps
• Rear compartment courtesy lamp
• Roof rail courtesy lamps
• Sunshade vanity mirror lamps

Interior Lamps Dimming
This group of interior lighting includes lamps which may be dimmed. This group uses a combination of class 2 controlled illumination and incandescent lamps:
• Air temperature switch
• Cigar lighter lamp
• Door switches
• Driver information center (DIC) switch
• Headlamp switch
• Head-up display (HUD) switch
• Heated seat switches
• HVAC control assembly
• Instrument panel cluster (IPC)
• Memory function switch
• Radio
• Steering wheel controls
• Window switches
For the interior lighting to be dimmed the following conditions must be met:
• A low light level has been detected by the dash integration module (DIM)
• Headlamp switch is placed in to the PARK or HEAD position
• Ignition switch is placed in the ON position
Then all class 2 displays and all incandescent back lighting will be illuminated to the level set by the instrument panel (I/P) dimmer switch. When the I/P dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all class 2 displays and all incandescent back lighting respond from minimum intensity to maximum brightness.
The DIM supplies battery positive voltage to the coil side of the PRK LP relay in the rear fuse block.
When the I/P dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, then the instrument panel module (IPM), W/CJ2, or climate control panel (CCP), W/C67, applies a message to the class 2 communication circuit to the DIM. The DIM then applies a ground to the park lamp relay control circuit. This energizes the PRK LAMP relay and allows battery positive voltage to be applied through the DIMR fuse to the DIM. The DIM then illuminates the following incandescent lamps through the incandescent dimming output circuit:
• Cigar lighter lamp
• DIC Switch
• Headlamp switch
• HUD switch
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC
• Radio
• Steering wheel controls
The DIM also applies a message to the following class 2 controlled illumination components:
• Drivers door module (DDM)
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC
• Radio
The DDM will then send a message through the simple bus interface (SBI) to the RH front door module (RFDM). The door modules will then illuminate the following components through the incandescent dimming output circuit:
• Air temperature switch
• Heated seat switches (W/KA1)
• Memory function switch (W/A45)
• Power door lock switches
• Power window switches
The ground for these components are provided from the DDM and RFDM.
The following components are grounded at G200:
• Headlamp switch
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC
• Radio
• Steering wheel controls
The following components are grounded at G201:
• Cigar lighter lamp
• DIC Switch
• HUD switch

The illumination switch won't shut off


First check the dimmer switch and make sure it is not turned all to way to the right or left ? The dimmer switch controls how bright your meter lights are, but if you turn it to the far left or right it will activate the interior lights and will stay on regardless. Other than that it could be a bad door switch, some back lights also have a 3 way switch, one way makes the light stay on all the time, the other position has the lights off no matter if the door or dimmer switch is on. The middle position work only when a door or back latch is open, then goes off when closed, hope this helps ?

- only 1 door look like it's the switch of the door the trouble

-if it's all doorsyour light can be burn or you switch control can be off!! check where is you interior light you have a little switch with 3 positions OFF, AUTOMATIC AND ON! PLAY WITH AND SEE IF YOUR LIGHT TURN ON! put it in the middle the get full acces!
and on your Dashboard ( on the left side of the steering) you suppose the get a dimmer setting for you Dashboard lights and it control the interior lights too. if you put it too far from the right side you put the interior lights off and your Dashboard lights will be at full range! do the test!

your switch control can be off!! check where is you interior light you maybe have a little switch with 3 positions OFF, AUTOMATIC AND ON! PLAY WITH AND SEE IF YOUR LIGHT TURN ON! put it in the middle the get full acces!
and on your Dashboard ( on the left side of the steering) you suppose the get a dimmer setting for you Dashboard lights and it control the interior lights too. if you put it too far from the right side you put the interior lights off and your Dashboard lights will be at full range! do the test!

Grand vitara 1999 when door open inside lights do not turn on


There should be a switch on the dash that controls the interior lights on the vehicle. It might be part of the dimmer switch. Usually the switch will turn on the interior lights in one position, off but on when door is open in another, then off all the time in the third position. Check this switch and verify that it is not in the off position. If the switch is in the correct position then the door swicth located on the inside of the door might be sticking. Check the switch stem/button action and makes sure it fully pushes in and out. Also verify that the interior bulb is good(not burned out) and that the fuse for the interor light is not burned out.

Interior lights don't go on


It sounds like the feature has been turned off. Check your owners manual, it will show you how to reactivate them again.
