Question about 2004 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler X 6 cyl, 4.0L? When I fill up the tank w/ gas the check engine light comes on. It eventually goes off, but it seems to use more gas when the light is on. I took it to advanced auto and they said the code showed a bad Throttle positioning sensor. I replaced it today. I then went and got gas and the check engine light came on again. Any ideas?

It is most likely a defective gas cap seal. They should have recommended this cheap replacement part first.

It could be the pump but you need to verify if you can hear the pump running after it stalls and you turn the key back on to try and start it. If you don't hear it it isn't running.
The pump is inside the tank but it dosen't come inside, you need to put it in there. That requires removing the tank. On a 90, there is a filter mounted on the chassis near the left rear tire. I'd replace that first as if you replace the pump, that should be replaced as well and if it's plugged up it may in fact be the only problem.

Check Engine light comes on in my 2006 Mazda 6 everytime after I fill the gas tank up - it goes off eventually. How do I fix this?

Sounds like a pressure leak in the fuel system. For a sure fix, have a mechanic scan the system -- your car's computer sets a trouble code each time the check engine light comes on. For a quick, inexpensive fix that will more than likely eliminate the problem, replace your fuel filler cap.

My Mazda MPV randomly begins to "chug" and act like it will die at a stop. the check engine light comes on. Started about 6 months ago. Seems to happen more when it rains. If I tighten the gas cap it stops...

the gas cap and check engine light thing are related in terms of the EVAP system, or the evaporative emisions system. This is NOT where your surge, or "chug" is coming from. The surge could be coming from a Exhaust Gas Recurculation valve that is starting to bind or "hang up" a bit. DO you notice this happens more at lights, or when coming to a stop? if so it could be an idle air control vavle.

Runs rough, misses, sometimes then clears up.

You have a cylinder misfire. You need to check the distributor, wires, and pull the plugs because something is not firing the fuel mixture in one or more of your cylinders at timew. you can do the plugs yourself for the most part. I dont know how the 6 cyl looks in the engine compartment of the wrangler, but from my experience with a 96 XJ, number 6 cylinder is very difficult to get to because of the interior air intake vents. if all the plugs seem fine, you may want to take it into a shop for a distrubutor and wire check

My 2002 jeep wrangler sport 4 cyl engine lite stays on dashboard,it does not affect performance.

Have you taken it to your mechanic to run the diagnostics... I had the same issue and it turned out to be a vapor lock issue that required a gas tank gasket replaced.
