Question about Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 94 Jeep Cherokee Country with the 4.0...At times the volt meter reads normal then other times it reads just past the low red. When you first start it at times it shows low charging rate then in about a 1/2 mile it goes to normal again about 13 volts..it will work fine for a few days then back to the low charge again and stay on low charge then back to normal again...one morning I started it and started out and my lights were dim and it read low charge then in about a 1/2 mile the lights came back up bright and charging was normal..the last time this happened I headed for the local Jeep dealer and by the time I got there it was charging normal again and they can't find a problem since everything is working ok again???

When was your belt last replaced, and or tensioner checked? Not uncommon for an older belt to get hard (especially when cold) and slip a little and not be able to do it's job properly. A 1/2 mile drive, is just about far enough for it to get a little warmed up and will get a better grip. My guess is, that problem does not appear when you've been driving for any amount of time or distance?

Keep in mind as well, that the more things you turn on when belt is cold and worn, causes alternator to work harder, which is driven by belt, thus belt more likely to slip, if worn or improper tension on it.

94 Jeep Cherokee TPS - back feed

You are still getting high or low voltage at tps? What is the voltage and do you have a unstable idle? Put you + lead on terminal 3 and - lead on terminal 1 turn ignition on and check voltage to be at approximately 5 volts. You can also back probe with it connected at center wire and ground probe to a good ground at engine. Turn ignition on it should read between 0.20 - 0.90 slowly manually open throttle it should rise all the way to 4.5 voltd at full open. If its bad change tps if no 5.0 volts from pcm on first test check connections at pcm. The center tps connector supply wire comes from pin 22 and connection 3 ( which is 5 volt supply ) comes from pin 6. You should be able to back probe pin 6 turn ignition on and have 5 volts. If not 5 v brain has problem.

87 jeep cherokee only getting 12.3 volts at battery. New alternator/battery , 3 wires comingfrom plug on back of alt. red one is not hooked up, does it go to the starter relay?

the red one should go to the battery positive post-check it with a voltage meter, when the car is running it should read 14+ volts.

How much could I expect to pay for a new 4.0L engine? I just got my 94 Jeep grand cherokee laredo for $200, so putting an engine in it will still be a great deal, I think.

that depends on what part of the country you live in. here in nys, a 4.0 will cost approx. at a junk yard ) low miles. about 3 to 4 hundred.

I need to know how to test my alternator without removing it to see if it's working. 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country.

Use a voltmeter to test battery voltage with the engine running. If the alternator is working correctly, the voltage should read 13.5 to 14.5 volts DC. If reads 12.6 volts or less, the alternator is not charging the battery. Take the car to Autozone or similar business for a free checkout of the alternator. It might be a bad voltage regulator instead of the alternator.

Does the 94 jeep cherokee country have abs, brakes

some do, some don't. If you have a simple master cylinder and don't have a bunch of abs components under the hood back near the passenger side firewall, then you have a "normal" system.
