1996 honda civic emssions failure

Hi, I have a 1996 honda civic hatchback which has failed its test for high emissions. Is there anything I can do cheaply like add an additive to the oil or is it a engine rebuild or change. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Just for your information the actual figures where double the max limit. I was unable to speak with anyone at the testing station as they had gone home so am just after alittle help.many thanks.

I have the same problem with my 96 honda civic dx. It only failed at the 15 MPH on the NO(PPM) max was 487 mine reed 770. Everything else passed. The O2 sensor good also the CAT passed any thing else that could fix the problem. The next thing I going to try is CRC states will pass or double money back we'll give it a shot and post what happens. Peace.

If your car has less than 150,000 miles on it and fails for emmisions any honda dealer will fix the problem FOR FREE honda factory warrantee. Same thing happened to me 3 days before my registration expired. They replaced the exhaust manifold and cover, catalytic converter and the exhaust all for free, and i passed inspection.

If you failed you should know if it is HC, NOx, or CO. Posting that will make it much easier to diagnose.

Will a1996 honda civic front door fit 2000 honda civic dx

The body style was the same from 1996 to 2000 for the Honda Civic. Are both of the Civics similar in body style as in they have the same number of doors? Not sure if a wagon or hatchback would interchange with a regular 2 door coupe.

How do you get the Nox levels down on a 1989 Honda Civic Hatchback?

Make sure the timing is set to spec, 3 degrees to the ****** side from the factory spec) is permitted with little loose of perfromance and will reduce NOX emissions. The other problem that causes this is a worn out Catalytic Converter.

check for any vacuum leaks, run some injector and combustion cleaner through it, check the pcv valve and the egr valve, and fresh oil, can't think of anything else

1993 honda civic ex will not pass HC emissions test. Please help

You don't say what state you are in and what the requirements. The early 90s Honda Civics frequently are high on emissions under certain circumstances depending on how the test is run. If you are in a state that allows you to get a waiver with a certain amount of repair - that would be the recommended way to go. A lot of times the amount required is enough to detect the problem, but if not it is basically the cost of keeping the car. I am in Washington State and my 91 Honda Civic runs great and gets 38 mpg but fails the test. I have a new O2 sensor, catalytic converter and distributor and fail. I pay $150 for repairs / waiver every 2 years - and I am an ASE Certified Master Tech. I figure $75 a year saves me a car payment.

hi,  this got fixed . . . all my fuses i checked WERE good . .  BUT, i had taken out my dome light fuse to replace another similar fuse that had blown . . . the mechanic at Honda let me know that the diagnostic system runs through the domelight fuse for some reason - once that fuse was replaced, it was good to go!
