Question about 1965 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

I had a sbc 350, just rebuilt to a 383. i cant get my car on time. #1 TDC and set dist. wires good. continues to drive like a popcorn machine. also there is a chunking noise that came with the rebuild, sounds like at the rear of the motor, but is not at engine speed, maybe every two to three seconds, chunk chunk. vibrates the motor.

Sounds like 180 degrees off somewhere.

Go to online site of autozone.com , oreillys...etc and you may have to register but they have free online step by step manuals.

Rebuilt engine with timing problems

You have it right, the yellow mark is TDC and it's the notch furthest to the left...it e to be set at 15 degrees before TDC, but you have to disconnect the I.A.C sensor to do it.if it's still that far out, you're probably of by a tooth.bring #1 piston to TDC, pull out distributor, turn rotor to #1 on dist cap and put in dist..adjust accordingly. .

Marks on or in a distributor can only get it close. Use a timing light to get it exact.

How to set timing to t.d.c. on 1992 302 motor

Why would you need to set TDC if you just pulled the Dist. Cap? The TDC mark is on the Harmonic Balancer, sounds like you should let a Pro help you out, Ford also places a 1 where 1 wire should be on the cap, No 1 wire is the front cylinder on the passenger side, with the crankshaft set at TDC the rotor will point to where No 1 wire should be. Installing distibitor 1997 5.7vortec

with # 1 piston (front piston on drivers side) on tdc compression stroke place distributor in pointing at the front of the drivers front tire as it drops in it should point roughly at the # 1 piston as it rotates clockwise as it drops in , the cam gears have to mesh so dont force it . if it wont drop into place try a small bump of the starter while applying light pressure down on the dist.it should drop into place and then lock it down a bit . get #1 piston back on tdc compression stroke make sure the power wire is off the dist . the big red 1..you dont want it having spark yet. if it goes into place then set your cap and wires back in and time it with timing light .remove vacum hose from vacum can on side of dist and plug the hose off then use timing light and set to what factory says , usually between 4-8 degrees btdc. 1-3-5-7 piston numbers front to back drivers side ///// 2-4-6-8 front to back on pass side firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and the dist should have #1 pointing at the drivers front corner of engine. start # 1 plug wire there and work clockwise next spot clockwise on dist is #8 plug wire and so on.. good luck

2001 1500 4.3L did intake job cant get to start right

ok there is no way to physicaly time the engine with a light. you need to bring #1 cylinder to TDC then install dist. mark contact for ign wire #1 on cap outer as accurately as possible. then mark dist. base with same mark. allign rotor with mark and tighten clamp. assemble and fire make sure fireing order is right, cap is stamped on top. the exact way to set is with a scanner, cam(dist.) sensor and crank sensor need to bolth read #1 TDC at 0 degree advance and tighten clamp, computer takes over from there. be as accurate as possible, if done right it will run, if engine light flashes, your too far off try to bump a tick either way and have a tech set for you with a scanner. best of luck!

Timing on a 350 chey engine

take out number 1 spark plug and put your finger as to block the hole ,have a friend bump the starter till you feel air rush out real fast / called the compression stroke when it does stop and look down the top center for timing marks on the pulley and line them up on the timing cover then place the distributor in place as so the rotor is pointing at the #1 piston location, basically the dr. front corner and start there, timing order is 1..8..4..3..6..5..7..2.. now if you get all these in right 1..3..5..7 are on the drivers side front to back and 2..4..6..8 on the passengers bank front to back and the distributor turns clockwise .good luck hope this helps you.
