Hi, if the engine won't crank or cranks slowly when you attempt to start or jump start the engine (and the battery is fully charged), you can focus your attention on the starter circuit. A quick way to diagnose cranking problems is to switch on the headlights and watch what happens when you attempt to start the engine. If the headlights go out, a poor battery cable connection may be strangling the flow of amps. All battery cable connections should be checked and cleaned along with the engine-to-chassis ground straps.

If the headlights continue to shine brightly when you attempt to start the engine and nothing happens (no cranking), voltage is not reaching the starter. The problem here is likely an open or misadjusted park/neutral safety switch, a bad ignition switch, or a faulty starter relay or solenoid. Fuses and fusible links should also be checked because overloads caused by continuous cranking or jump starting may have blown one of these protective devices.

If the lights dim and there is little or no cranking when you attempt to start the engine, the starter may be locked up, dragging or suffering from high internal resistance, worn brushes, shorts or opens in the windings or armature. A starter current draw test will tell you if the starter is pulling too many amps.

We just bought a 05 chevy equinox 2 days ago. Last night the "service engine"light came on. My husband went to check the oil and cant find the dip stick.

If you don't tighten the gas cap (make it click at least four times) when refueling it will turn the check engin light on. The dip stick is located in the front of the engine and is a yellow loop.

Will not maintain electrical charge. It works fine for a few months and then one day it has no power to start the engine. I hook up jumper cables and it instantly has power to hood light door beepers etc....

Check that all battery cables are clean and tight.

Check the date/age of battery, and compare to the rated life of the battery. If anywhere near the end of the rated life, suspect the battery. Suspect battery if all terminals are clean and tight.

Couldn't start the engine last night It was towed

Couldn't start .... explain symptoms:
Did starter crank?
was engine warm? cold?

The only symptom you describe is that it started when the engine was cold.

Try this:
Disconnect the battery cables and clean the cable clamps and the battery posts. Car can't start when warm with dirty battery connections (resistance too high). Low resistance when cold.

WILL NOT START

sounds like water ingress to either a control module or the coil pack, check all control box locations eg footwells for water and then check the engine bay for loose or naked wires, dry and clean and possibly cover with a plastic bag etc and it should be fine.

My 85 silverado was doing the same thing last week. After a few days of that B.S. I ended up replacing the fuel pump and filter and she's been running great since,

PS. The fuel filter is located at the carburator.

Truck having trouble starting.

With the engine running remove the positive battery cable, if the engine continues to run the alternator is good and the battery is probably bad. If the engine dies then the opposite is true.
