Question about Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

2005 PT Cruiser/turbo: accelerated on the freeway, slow response to none...almost felt like it lost power. coming off the freeway, turning right, there was a clacking noise coming from the right side. car made a low whistle sound in neutral. the mechanic is changing the oil (synthetic blend) but can't find anything else wrong. that's what the last guy said before the turbo went out. suggestions?

if it's a faulty turbo, does that mean replacing it...again? and if it's a pressure leak in the turbo plumbing to the engine, can it be fixed?

  • pjthomas9160 Nov 05, 2010

yes, rebuilt turbo was replaced almost 2 years ago...

  • pjthomas9160 Nov 05, 2010

p.s. just asked about the turbo and/or pressure leak possibilities...sounded like he had limited if any experience with turbos and only wanted to change the oil...hasn't driven it, or really checked it out...my 1st time with this guy, but my gut says it'll be the last.

have the turbos changed much from 2005 to 2010 PT cruisers? does it make any difference to buy a new one from Chrysler or a rebuilt or used one?

The symptoms you are describing are from a faulty turbo or a pressure leak in the turbo plumbing to the engine air intake, have him check that first.

The pressure leak from the turbo can be repaired fairly easily once found, but if that is not the problem then yes the turbo will need to be replaced again, is this a rebuilt turbo you used last time?

Based on my experince (35 years) rebuilt Turbochargers have a very high failure rate.

I strongly suggest you only used Chrysler rebuilt parts, also use the correct weight of synthetic oil, it extends turbo life greatly.

Take the car to a dealership, they know the product, yes they cost more but they have the proper training and equipment to fix it right and do it faster.

2003 PT Cruiser turbo. Has just 67k miles on it. Just began making a low pitched loud whistle sound on acceleration or load/uphill. Gets louder with greater acceleration/load, no decrease in power.

I took my car to Keller's Auto Repair in Gettysburg PA, He specializes in Chryslers. I have 04 Cruiser with 2.4 Turbo that had the same whistle noise, and check engine light on. He found code P0301. The noise was caused by the #1 Cylinder injector O ring. Check them out on facebook. They will help you.
