Question about 1986 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

I have a '86 4Runner and the brake light and battery light just came on. There were no other obvious signs that there was a problem. Can you tell me what this means? Thanks, James

Battery and Brake lights together indicate an alternator issue. You can have your alternator checked at various auto parts stores, specifically Auto Zone.

Depending on the car, that light might be telling you that you have a problem with an ABS sensor or other part of the brake system that might no obviously be causing a problem now but could in the near future on in an emergency braking situation.

Inspection and Verification
NOTE: If any concerns are noted with the speedometer, stoplamps, or horn, address those concerns by referring to the appropriate sections before continuing speed control diagnosis.
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the speed control system.
  1. NOTE: Any aftermarket modifications, including but not limited to those listed below, may cause the speed control to not operate correctly:
    • Any wiring or lamp modifications affecting the brake lamp operation
    • LED brake lamps
    • Non-factory installed trailer wiring
    • Radios (speed sensitive, auto mute)
    • Remote starters and alarms
    • Lighting and electrical accessory modifications
Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage:
    • Visually inspect the speed control actuator and accelerator controls.
    • Visually inspect the speed control cable without removing it and ensure smooth cable operation. Inspect the speed control cable connection to the throttle body.
    • Visually inspect the accelerator cable without removing it and ensure smooth cable operation. Inspect the accelerator cable connection to the throttle body. Also check for cable interference with the carpet, bulkhead grommet, insulation and instrument panel wiring.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

Brake sign can come up if one or more stop bulbs are blown out. The battery sign is difficult to diagnose with this amount of information.

Batterie and brake light stays on changed new batterie new alternator car ran fine the next day the car would not crank

There is obviously have a drain on the battery. You have a faulty break light pedal switch causing the lights to stay on, or your turn signal switch is bad. your brake lights run through, the turn signal switch too. That could also cause the problem.

Why does the battery light and brake light flash on & off?

If it can be determined that the oil leak caused the alt. to fail prematurely it should be replaced at no cost to you.If it is obvious and there is alot of oil on the alt.I would file it under the warranty.

I have a 2004 Trailblazer. Recently had a tune up done. Now my brake lights will not go off, even with the vehicle off. I had to remove the battery connection to keep the bulbs from overheating. Help!

The brake switch is likely stuck on.It should be somewhere on the linkage on the back of the brake pedal up a little higher out of sight. If you disconnected the battery, you will probably have to call the dealer to get the method of unlocking your stereo which happens anytime battery is disconnected and they will do at no cost.Write it down too for obvious reasons. If you are not able to repair it right away, the better way to avoid this would be to remove the fuse to the brakes. The fuse box diagram is in the owners manual but if you don't have it the dealer will tell you that for free also.Good luck! The a.b.s. are engaged at70kms and over, tire hop in front wheels obviously.this started when it got down to -20celcius,what is a inexpensive way to fix the problem help me signed Joe in kikino

The easiest thing to do for now is just remove the main abs fuse from the underhood fuse block. It should be labeled, or the cover or owners manual will tell you which one it is. The abs light will stay on, but abs will be disabled and you will have normal braking.

the handbrake light means your handbreaks on you switch might need to be replaced
the battery light means the battery is low on charge either a new battery or alternotor need to know more to answer that one
