Hello, I have 1996 Ciera with rebuilt engine pretty new, also fuel filter and fuel pump replaced but I have a problem, the car starts and runs well cold but once car has been running for a few hours, either stopping or coming to a stop it starts to idle roughly and has come to a stop at different occasions. Check engine light does come on and off occasionally. Can you help?

96 xh ute won't start when warm

I would check all the fuses. I pull them and look. This takes care of any corrosion problems. Which sounds like what you have. Also check the main plugs for the coil and injectors for corrosion.

Have a 96 geo prizm that won't accelerate very well and is making a knocking sound any ideas?

knocking is a big thing, its a cry for help.
can be minor to horrific
knocking parked? or only driving.
in neutal or park?
knocking hot block, or cold block or both? at what RPM>/
only real oil pressure gauge works, not the idiot lamp
when the lamp comes on at 3-5psi, the war was lost.
my 96 makes 55psi cold just cranking, want a video of that?
find the knocking first.

if can ,be knocked , parked.?
id check oil pressure. real.
use a $5 stethoscope. find it.
drop all belts. to see if an accessory device knocks. (5min test max cold to start, yes, water pump dead)
PS/AC/ALT dead too.
still knock>
listen at valve cover. coming from there.
is the timing belt is old over 60k thy all shard and some knock load hitting that cover, it a for sure thing, skipping the 60k mile service point,
exhast header collerctor fange gasket , bad, allowing bang band bang as the 2 flanges pound themselves to death.
the top of the engine, see induction pips. (AIR) those mounts for sure can bang away, bolts missing.

knocking:
1 overheated the engine so bad its pinging? knocks up hills?
2: say exaclty when and not you get the knocks.

Why does my thermostat gage keep going from cold to hot constantly

I really would like some clarification on that.
If your inside gauge seems to read cold for a while and then just goes hot it generally means either the gauge is sticking or much more likely the thermostat is sticking because it is about to go bad. Actually it has gone bad already if it is staying closed. Now most thermostats have a little bypass hole to let air and small amounts of water through to circulate all the time. this allows the hot water to actually reach the thermostat when it is mounted somewhat from the heat source. If that hole becomes plugged it will give the same effect since the entire engine has to get hot before the thermostat can even start opening. Once it starts opening it gets a rush of super hot water that slams it wide open.
If you don't notice any problems with the engine like water boiling over or any other strange behavior then it is likely the actual gauge in the dash sticking or the sensor malfunctioning.
What you want to do is take a laser temp gauge and get a temp reading off the radiator when the engine is reading hot. this will give you an idea whether or not it is lying to you. bring it over and ill lend you mine. ;)

could be a cracked block engine.what i would do is put a tarp or old sheet down park vehicle on it and wait then when you check you can look on old sheet to see where its leaking and it will give you an idea where to look for the leek if it was head gasket youd have sludgey looking whitesh foam in the oil

96 dodge daytona. Starts fine at first then as driving down road it will shut down just like turning off key except theres power every where i can see. then it doesnt seem to wanna start just turns over....

hi, this is a common problem and only points at one thing being at fault, the problem you are having is going to be with the oxygen sensor(or lambda sensor for its true name)
Now the reason it points to this is that when the car is cold the oxygen sensor isnt working as it only starts working when it reaches a certain temperature and this is when your getting the problem then whilst the car is still hot it just wont start but as soon as it cools down you will find it starts as normal.

Replacing this part will solve your problem.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
