I just found a crack in the sterring column what does this mean? What should I do? Is the truck safe to drive still? #2 I do not use the air conditioner, I was told it didn't work, but there is a sound coming from the part under the hood... it looks like fluid. What do I need to do? Please and thank-you

The plastic of older cars will tend to crack after the years so you should be ok as long as it hasn't been tamperd with like someone trying to hotwire it.

The Steering wheel is fine there is a plastic coating over steel it's not going to break. Take it to your local garage and have it checked, because if you don't know anything about repairing a car it will be impossible for you fix.

How do I remove and install steering column? Thanks

This all depends on what year the vehicle is? And wether there is an airbag fitted on the steering wheel front. If there is an airbag fitted on the steering wheel front, then the job is best left to a qualified mechanic, as the airbag sensor will have to be disconnected ( Disabled) and this can be very tricky. If there is no airbag on the front steering wheel cover then you will need a good socket set, remove the front cover of the steering wheel and undo the bolt holding on the wheel to the column, then you will see the rest of the bolts for the column at the rear, remove these also, take pics of the set up of wiring looms and bolts before! And keep all parts in a box for safe keeping.

I have a 2003 gmc seria 1500 z71 the sterring makes a clunking noise since the day i got it used sounds like a joint under between dasdh and fire wall. just recently while driving truck wouldnt truck would...

On the rack and pinion steering gear there is a short shaft that couples with the steering column shaft by a flexible joint. Similar to a u-joint. To check it, get under the truck and push back the rubber protective boot where the steering column comes out of the firewall. Look for the flexible joint and check if it is binding or loose. Someone may need to turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch it. You may need the front wheels raised to observe its turning action. There is a pinch bolt that secures the joint to the rack and pinion stub shaft, it may have come loose or the joint may be bad.

Sterring column worn out 1989 silverado 4 wheel

The best option is related to the actual damage on the unit which needs a good observation and check. If the bushes are worn out on the column then this can be overhauled at a machine shop. If the damage is more then there best way is to replace to give you the best performance.
Also the spares for the steering ends, joints and linkages must be checked to be free of any PLAY or SHAKE.
Thank You for using Fixya.

The sterring whell is lock and elv is malfuntion

on the 5 series you can replace the elv itself it is an aluminum box bolted to the steering column under the kick pannel although bolts are very dificult to remove without removing the column but can be done. they are sheer bolts meaning that when tightened the heads are ment to brake off and you have to use a chizzle to break bolts loose

How do I remove the key rotating switch from the sterring coloum?

do you mean the ignition switch? sadly, its actually pretty difficult to remove. usually the screws that tighten them on are then purposely broken so the ignition is not tampered with. you'll have to take it to a dealership to get replaced. You can check by removing the plastic from the steering column. there might be 2-3 screws holding the plasic on the bottom of the column. then unclip the plastic. then you'll be able to see the ignition switch and how it is screwed on.

Shift lever on column came loose inside column.

no, u shouldn't have to pull the steering wheel. pull the cover off the column, there are 2 or 4 nuts that hold the column up to the dash, remove them and let the column lay on the seat- u should disconnect your battery before doing so. you can get to the shift tube from there- most likely u'll find that the bushings have gone bad and need replacement.
