Question about Pontiac Grand Prix

I'm losing coolant but it's not going into the oil and there's no pressure building up in radiator, do I have a cracked head, head gasket or whorp head. This is a 3.8L engine in a 98 Grand Prix with 219k miles.

It sounds like the radiator it self they can be leaking with such a fine mist that you cann;t see it Ihad a chevy radiator that was doing this i took it to the radiator shop hte guy told me this and i didn;t beleave it then he put pressure in it put in his tank and proved it to me so i bought a new radiator and that fixed the problem hope this helps

Engine oil mixing into coolant


The only place, oil and water share a gasket is the cylinder head gasket, oil and water galleries run through the engine block and head via the head gasket. The cylinder pressure will be OK, it's the oil pressure that's putting the oil in the coolant, the gasket has gone between the water and oil galleries or there is an internal crack (unlikely). A coolant pressure test should show it up.

Doesn't sound like it ran hot enough or long enough to crack or warp the head. If there is a crack, the engine will continue to overheat. If a warped head, car would probably run rough, the affected cylinders would likely have little or no compression, there would be a noticeable miss, and overheating would continue.
Why the low coolant? It's a sealed system, so should never have to add coolant, other than a small loss from evaporation in the overflow tank. Monitor the level closely for the next few days. Note the level in the overflow tank to see if it drops over time. Leaks can be external anywhere in the coolant system-engine, radiator, hoses, heater core- or internal in the engine-head gasket failures can cause coolant in the cylinders (white smoke out the exhaust), or coolant in the oil (oil will have a milky brown look to it), or oil in the coolant (will see traces of oil in the radiator).
A couple of tests may be called for. A pressure test of the coolant system will check if the system holds pressure as it should-about 15 psi. If pressure does not hold, there is a leak somewhere. Water pumps usually leak through the weep hole when they fail. A radiator leak would show up when pressure is applied. If pressure does hold, check if you have a good radiator cap-the cap is what seals the system so pressure will maintain. Coolant under pressure raises it's boiling point by about 10 degrees, so is critical to keep the system under pressure.
If you suspect further problems-losing coolant or continued overheating-then have the chemical test done to check for exhaust gasses in the coolant. Basically a check if the head gasket is good, a simple test done at the radiator cap opening with a special fluid that changes color if hydrocarbons are present in the cooling system.
Or you could have a compression test of the cylinders to check the internal mechanical condition-not only tells you if head gasket is good, also tells you a lot about engine condition-even,. balanced, good compression in all cylinders translates into good power output-rings are good, valves are sealing good, all systems go.
The cooling system: water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses, heater core and hoses, radiator cap, overflow tank, and the cooling fans and associated wiring. Make sure everything is working right and you'll be good to go.

you should have the cooling system pressure tested and inspected for a leak that may only show up under pressure.it could be a slow leak from the water pump,frost plug,head gasket which wouldn`t show up in the oil,heater core.it sounds like a small leak but this is the best way to start to find it.

Getting oil in radiator --but no water in the oil--its NOT a blown head gasket or head -we allready checked that out -it's a datsun 1971 1600 cc engine with very low miles =truck runs great


What about the possibility of a crack in head gasket between oil passages and coolant passages. Oil pressure would be higher than cooling system pressure, thus oil would be more likely to enter cooling system, than coolant enter oil /lube system. Just a thought. Have you done a cooling system pressure test, just to see if any drop at all in pressure? Seeing how engine would not be running, oil pressure would be 0, and may allow coolant to seep through same path, only from cooling system, to oil. Is it a large amount that your getting?

My radiator is lose water everyday like a galon per day but i didnt find any liking. maybe the water is going inside the engine


check oil level if over full and looks like chocolate milk and exhaust for white smoke this could be a blown head gasket

Coolant overflowing out of expansion tank no boil no steam


As you've stated driving around town it's fine, and everything is working well. For the symptoms, there are 2 possible causes:
1. Your cooling fans are not working.
2. Your radiator needs to be replaced.
I'm sure you can determine which it is, and I wish you luck on your repair.

Oily coolant


yes, it is a definite sign of blown head gasket.
I did have only once a problem similar where the engine block was cracked but other than that,bet on the head gasket.
Take a coolant system pressure measurement, (if your head gasket is blown, the pressure in your coolant system would go down slowly)
