Question about 2002 Ford Crown Victoria

1 Answer

Brake Failure and/or Sudden Acceleration

As I braked for an intersection, I suddenly realized I wasn't slowing down and I felt like I was sliding through the intersection. It didn't feel like I was driving but rather like the car had accelerated on its own. I put my foot down on the ABS brakes again, it felt 'soft', and the car immediately fish-tailed and I had no control over the car. Somehow, I got the car around the corner and it eventually rolled to a stop on its own. I would have had a major collision if this had happened on a highway. (The car acted perfectly normal after this episode and I was able to drive it home without further incidents. Both my husband and our mechanic tried to duplicate what happened and the car did not do this again. The mechanic did all the electronic diagnostics on the car in the shop and found nothing.) PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME? I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR AGAIN.
My email address is: elwilliams@dellmail.com THANK YOU.

Same thing just happend to me this morning in my 2005 Ford F-150.

I was slowing to a stop light from about 25mph. Almost stopped when engine reved to almost full throttle. Pushed harder on brake and felt ABS pulse, ie spungy brake. Drove into the car in front of me.

There was no damage as I was only going about 5-10 mph at that time. I shut off the key, and put it put in Park. When I restarted, it when to full throttle again, this time in Park. I turned it off, waited 20 seconds and restarted. All was normal.

As I said, this just happed about 2 hrs ago, so I have not had it to a dealer yet. I assmue they will not be able to find a problem as it most likely was an electronic glitch in the system computer controls.

Hello there, I just recently bought a used F150 5.4 Crew. I am happy with the truck except one major concern, which as of yesterday showed up for the third time within 3 months. In a situation, where I was braking, having my foot on the brake pedal - and I mean brake pedal only - the truck started to rev up and accelerate. The last time it happened was yesterday in a client's driveway - no danger there; the first time it happened, while slowly approaching a traffic light, I was able to prevent an accident by (lucky enough) pushing the gear lever out of "N"; the second time was scary, though. On a small trip with my wife and son, trying to turn in a cul-de-sac while using a turn around for that, the truck again accelerated. This time we were very fortunate because we "only" ended up in the huge snow bench in front of us. Right behind the snow - a deep ditch. I need to pull a trailer for work. This is a big-time safety issue for me. The delaership could not find any mistakes. Please advice. Greatful for every input

I bought a 2008 ford crown victoria, Police Interceptor and the dealer told me the car was good and all. My dad drove it out of the dealership and the brakes failed, and the car began to accelerate, and ended up hitting 2 cars after avoiding many more

SOURCE: brakes

sounds like your abs feature is in-operative(that's the one that won't allow the wheels to lock-up when the brake is applied in an emergency)the abs system should pulse your brakes during an emergency application of pressure on the pedal,i'd get to a dealer immediately (and i mean don't go anywhere else until this problem is corrected)

SOURCE: ford windstar. only when i start to drive the car

Sounds as if you have a false activation of the ABS system.
If the light does not come on until you are driving then the ABS module is probably seeing a difference in wheel speed from side to side. It could be caused by different size tires, are all your tires the same size and brand? It could be caused by one tire having low tire pressure. It could also be one of the sensor rings esp. on the front has maybe cracked and slipped out of place causing the air gap between the sensor and the ring to be larger than it is suppose to be.The gap between sensor and ring is usually 0.045 of an inch sometimes the ring which is pressed onto the outer CV joint will crack and the ring will slid up the joint slightly away from the sensor. This will decrease the amplitude of the sensor signal and ABS interputs this as a wheel trying to slip or lock up and activates the ABS.When ABS activates it will make a loud pulsing type sound and it will almost feel like it is not going to stop.

SOURCE: Slow acceleration from stop and when driving (trying to pass)

I have the same car. So far no problems with the Transmision. I had the Trans oil change out every 60 K Sure sounds like you need to get the Transmision checked. Is the fault light on. I have invested ina fault code reader sure is worth it.
Good luck.  Vilmos

SOURCE: 2005 Taurus Check Brake System Flashes Then Car Dies

I won't go into a long technical explanation of how todays high tech vehicles work.
You want to know what to do.

You can not fix this yourself. Period.

You need to take the Taurus to a repair shop. You do not need to go to the dealer

They will charge you a diagnostic fee to scan your vehicle, then quote a price to repair

The brakes on my 1997 Volkswagen Golf will periodically give out, the pedal going all the way to the floor, and then work normally at the next stop.

Hi Sdill, That must have been scarry! I suggest looking at the following:- Make sure there has been no separation of the brake linings from the mountings. Make sure that the rear brake assembly locators and retaining mounts have not come adrift. Check the front calipers and brake pads. Check the pedal movement and determine the normal movement with the engine running (car stationary) and the engine off and let me know the travel distance. Check for any signs of leakage of brake fluid on the inside of any of the wheels. Check for signs of leakage from the brake master cylinder. Check the flexible brake hoses for swelling or breakage. Check for broken or loose fitting of the hose to the brake booster and the one way valve operation of booster valve. When the failure occurs is there any braking effect at all? or does the pedal go to the floor with nothing happening? I'll be waiting for your reply. Regards John
