Tach hook up for chevy with hei distribitor is 1)white wire ; 12volt source 2)red wire -12 volt ignition switch (+) 3)black wire -battery ground (-) green wire ; to tach terminal on dist. / if it not hei with points just put green wire to neg. (-) side of coil

  1. Remove the No. 1 cylinder spark plug.


  2. Turn the engine using a socket wrench on the large bolt on the front of the crankshaft pulley. Place a finger near the No. 1 spark plug hole and turn the crankshaft until the piston reaches Top Dead Center (TDC). As the engine approaches TDC, you will feel air being expelled by the No. 1 cylinder. If the position is not being met, turn the engine another full turn (360 degree). Once the engine\'s position is correct, install the spark plug.


  3. Align the pre-drilled indent hole in the distributor driven gear with the white painted alignment line on the lower portion of the shaft housing.


  4. Using a long screwdriver, align the oil pump drive shaft in the engine in the mating drive tab in the distributor.


  5. Install the distributor in the engine.


  6. When the distributor is fully seated, the rotor segment should be aligned with the pointer cast in the distributor base. The pointer will have a "6" or "8" cast into it indicating a 6 or 8-cylinder engine. If the rotor segment is not within a few degrees of the pointer, the distributor gear may be off a tooth or more. If this is the case repeat the process until the rotor aligns with the pointer.


  7. Install the cap and fasten the mounting screws.


  8. Install the hold-down clamp and bolt, then tighten the bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).


  9. Engage the electrical connections and the spark plug wires.

HEI Systems


  1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Stop the engine and connect the timing light to the No. 1 (left front) spark plug wire, at the plug or at the distributor cap. You can also use the No. 6 wire, if it is more convenient. Numbering is illustrated in this section.


Do not pierce the plug wire insulation with HEI; it will cause a miss. The best method is an inductive pickup timing light.



  1. Clean off the timing marks and mark the pulley or damper notch and timing scale with white chalk.


  2. Disconnect and plug the vacuum line at the distributor on models with a carburetor. This is done to prevent any distributor vacuum advance. On fuel injected models, disengage the timing connector which comes out of the harness conduit next to the distributor, this will put the system in the bypass mode. Check the under hood emission sticker for any other hoses or wires which may need to be disconnected.


  3. Start the engine and adjust the idle speed to that specified on the Underhood Emissions label. With automatic transmission, set the specified idle speed in Park. It will be too high, since it is normally (in most cases) adjusted in Drive. You can disconnect the idle solenoid, if any, to get the speed down. Otherwise, adjust the idle speed screw.


The tachometer connects to the TACH terminal on the distributor and to a ground on models with a carburetor. On models with fuel injection, the tachometer connects to the TACH terminal on the ignition coil. Some tachometers must connect to the TACH terminal and to the positive battery terminal. Some tachometers won\'t work with HEI.

  1. Aim the timing light at the pointer marks. Be careful not to touch the fan, because it may appear to be standing still. If the pulley or damper notch isn\'t aligned with the proper timing mark (see the Underhood Emissions label), the timing will have to be adjusted.

  2. Turn the distributor slowly to adjust the timing, holding it by the body and not the cap. Turn the distributor in the direction of rotor rotation to retard, and against the direction of rotation to advance.


  3. Tighten the locknut. Check the timing again, in case the distributor moved slightly as you tightened it.


  4. Reinstall the distributor vacuum line or the timing connector. Correct the idle speed.


  5. Stop the engine and disconnect the timing light.

This service procedure is for setting base ignition timing. Refer to underhood emission sticker for any additional service procedure steps and/or specifications.
These engines require a tachometer hook-up to the check connector-see illustrations. NEVER allow the tachometer terminal to become grounded; severe and expensive damage can occur to the coil and/or igniter.
Some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system, confirm the compatibility of your unit before using.
  1. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Turn off all electrical accessories. Do not attempt to check timing specification or idle speed on a cold engine.

  1. Connect a tachometer (connect the tachometer (+) terminal to the terminal IG- of the check connector) and check the engine idle speed to be sure it is within the specification given in the Tune-Up Specifications chart or underhood emission sticker.
  2. Remove the cap on the diagnostic check connector. Using a small jumper wire or Special Service Tool SST 09843-18020, short terminals TE1 (test terminal No. 1) and E1 (earth-ground) together.
  3. If the timing marks are difficult to see, shut the engine OFF and use a dab of paint or chalk to make them more visible.
  4. Connect a timing light according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  1. Start the engine and use the timing light to observe the timing marks. With the jumper wire in the check connector the timing should be to specifications (refer to underhood emission sticker as necessary) with the engine fully warmed up (at correct idle speed) and the transmission in correct position. If the timing is not correct, loosen the bolts at the distributor just enough so that the distributor can be turned. Turn the distributor to advance or ****** the timing as required. Once the proper marks are seen to align with the timing light, timing is correct.

  1. Without changing the position of the distributor, tighten the distributor bolts and double check the timing with the light (check idle speed as necessary).
  2. Disconnect the jumper wire or Special Service Tool (SST) at the diagnostic check connector.

This jumper will be used repeatedly during diagnostics in later sections. Take the time to make a proper jumper with correct terminals or probes. It's a valuable special tool for very low cost.
  1. Refer to the underhood emission sticker for timing specification and any additional service procedure steps. If necessary, repeat the timing adjustment procedure.
  2. Shut the engine OFF and disconnect all test equipment. Roadtest the vehicle for proper operation.

Need hei distributor wiring diagram


That distributor is an easy one. You need to connect the harness attached to the distributor housing to the cap. There is a marking on the cap that says "Batt" Connect that to the hot lead from the ignition switch that is on (with 12V present) and off with switch off. Likely the connector and wire are still in the engine compartment somewhere near the distributor. The other lead connection is marked "tach" you don't need to connect it anywhere but can attach a hand held or on dash tachometer to it.
If you get no spark from the distributor, either the module inside it is bad (no test for that. they are either good or bad) or one of the wires coming from the pickup coil that attach to the module has broken (common on those). (assuming good or new cap, rotor and coil).
It's a very simple and reliable distributor. In fact I'm using one on a 305 Monte Carlo racemobile right now. (with MSD coil, cap and rotor)!!!

Hi, I have pasted the procedure below. Your spec is 0 degrees (right at TDC).


CHECKING AND ADJUSTMENT

HEI Systems

  1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Stop the engine and connect the timing light to the No. 1 (left front) spark plug wire, at the plug or at the distributor cap. You can also use the No. 6 wire, if it is more convenient. Numbering is illustrated in this section.

Do not pierce the plug wire insulation with HEI; it will cause a miss. The best method is an inductive pickup timing light.
  1. Clean off the timing marks and mark the pulley or damper notch and timing scale with white chalk.
  2. Disconnect and plug the vacuum line at the distributor on models with a carburetor. This is done to prevent any distributor vacuum advance. On fuel injected models, disengage the timing connector which comes out of the harness conduit next to the distributor, this will put the system in the bypass mode. Check the underhood emission sticker for any other hoses or wires which may need to be disconnected.
  3. Start the engine and adjust the idle speed to that specified on the Underhood Emissions label. With automatic transmission, set the specified idle speed in Park. It will be too high, since it is normally (in most cases) adjusted in Drive. You can disconnect the idle solenoid, if any, to get the speed down. Otherwise, adjust the idle speed screw.

The following procedure requires the use of a distributor wrench and a timing light. When using a timing light, be sure to consult the manufacturer's recommendations for installation and usage.
The vehicle emission control information label, which is found underhood, will often contain specifications or procedures for checking and adjusting timing that have been updated during production. The information contained on the label should always be used if it differs from these instructions.
On most HEI systems, the tachometer connects to the TACH terminal on the coil and to a ground. Some tachometers must connect to the TACH terminal and to the positive battery terminal. Also, note that some tachometers won't work at all with an HEI system. Consult the tachometer manufacturer if the instructions supplied with the unit do not give the proper connection.


WARNING Never ground the HEI TACH terminal; serious system damage will result, including ignition module burnout.

  1. Set the parking brake and block the drive wheels, warm the engine to normal operating temperature.
  2. Shut the engine OFF and connect the a timing light to the No. 1 spark plug (right front 2.8L engine, left front 4.3L engine or front plug on in-line engines):
    1. If using a non-inductive type, connect an adapter between the No. 1 spark plug and the spark plug wire; DO NOT puncture the spark plug wire, for this will cause a voltage leak.
    2. If using an inductive type, clamp it around the No. 1 spark plug wire.
    3. If using a magnetic type, place the probe in the connector located near the damper pulley; this type must be used with special electronic timing equipment.


Do not under any circumstances pierce the insulation of a spark plug wire in order to connect the timing light.

  1. Clean off the timing marks, then label the pulley or damper notch and the timing scale with white chalk or paint for better visibility. If the timing notch on the damper or pulley is not visible from the top, the crankshaft should be bumped around using the starter or turned using a wrench on the front pulley bolt, in order to bring the mark to an accessible position.
  2. On early model vehicles not equipped with EST, disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose at the distributor to prevent any distributor vacuum advance. The vacuum line is the rubber hose connected to the metal cone-shaped canister on the side of the distributor. A short screw, pencil, or a golf tee can be used to plug the hose.







  1. On later model vehicles equipped with EST, the electronic spark timing must be disabled or bypassed to prevent the control module from advancing timing while you are attempting to set it. This would obviously lead to an incorrect base timing setting. There are 2 possible methods of disabling the EST system, depending on the type of engine:

    On 2.5L engines, ground the "A'' and "B'' terminals on the ALDL connector under the dash before adjusting the timing. On all other engines using the EST distributor, disengage the timing connector wire. On a few of the earlier model vehicles, the 4-terminal EST connector must be disengaged from the distributor. Most later model vehicles are equipped with a single wire timing bypass connector. On these later model vehicles the bypass wire is usually a tan wire with a black stripe. The wire usually breaks out of the wiring harness conduit adjacent to the distributor, but on some vehicles it may break out of a taped section just below the heater case in the passenger compartment.
  2. Start the engine, then check and adjust the idle speed, as necessary. The idle speed must be properly set to prevent any centrifugal advance of timing in the distributor.
  3. Aim the timing light at the timing marks. Be careful not to touch the fan, which may appear to be standing still. Keep your clothes and hair along with the timing light's wires clear of the fan, belts and pulleys. If the pulley or damper notch isn't aligned with the proper timing mark, the timing will have to be adjusted.

TDC or Top Dead Center corresponds to 0° mark on the scale. Either B, BTDC, or Before Top Dead Center, may be shown as BEFORE on the scale, while A, ATDC or After Top Dead Center, may be shown as AFTER.
  1. Loosen the distributor base clamp locknut. You can buy special wrenches which make this task a lot easier on certain models. Turn the distributor slowly to adjust the timing, holding it by the body and not the cap. Turn the distributor in the direction of rotor rotation (found in the firing order illustrations earlier in this Section) to ******, and against the direction to advance.
  2. Once the timing is properly set, hold the distributor to keep it from the turning and tighten the locknut. Check the timing again after finishing with the nut in case the distributor moved as you tightened it.
  3. If applicable, remove the plug and connect the distributor vacuum hose.
  4. If necessary check and/or adjust the idle speed.
  5. Shut off the engine and reconnect the EST wire (if equipped), then disconnect the timing light and tachometer.

External
All engines, except the 2S-ELC, have an external igniter.
  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Separate the wiring harness connections.
  3. Unbolt the igniter.
  4. Loosen the nut holding the wire lead onto the coil.
  5. Tag and disconnect the wire lead.
  6. Lift the igniter off its mount.

To install:
  1. Mount the igniter to the bracket.
  2. Attach the wire lead to the coil.
  3. Connect the harness.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

Internal
REMOVING IGNITER WITH DISTRIBUTOR
See Figure 1
The internal igniter is only applicable to 2S-ELC engine Camry models. All other engines are equipped with an external igniter assembly.
Review the complete service procedure before this repair. Note position, color of wire and routing of all internal distributor assembly wiring.
  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the number one spark plug. Place a finger over the spark plug hole and rotate the crankshaft clockwise to top dead center. When there is pressure felt on the finger at the spark plug hole, this will be top dead center of the compression stroke on number one cylinder. If not, repeat the procedure. Install the number one spark plug.
  3. Mark the position of the distributor flange in relation to the camshaft housing. Remove the IIA distributor assembly.
  4. Remove the distributor cap with the wires attached, and remove the packing. Mark the position of the rotor relative to the housing and pull the rotor straight up and off the shaft. The distributor cap is held to the housing with three retaining screws.
  5. Remove the ignition coil dust cover.
  6. Remove the two nuts and spring washers and disconnect the four wires from the terminals on the side of the ignition coil. The wires are color coded yellow, blue, brown and red.
  7. Remove the four retaining screws and remove the ignition coil and packing.
  8. Remove the nuts and disconnect the pink, white and black wires from the igniter terminals. Remove the two igniter retaining screws and remove the igniter.

To install:
  1. Attach the new igniter with the two retaining screws. Connect the pink, black and white wires to their respective terminals and install the nuts. Make sure that the pick-up coil wires are secured in their clips and that there is slack in the wires.
  2. Install the ignition coil and attach it with the four retaining screws.
  3. Connect the four ignition coil wires to their respective terminals and install the two nuts and spring washers.
  4. Install the coil dust cover and push the rotor onto the shaft.
  5. Place the distributor cap and wires into position. Install and tighten the retaining screws.
  6. Install the distributor assembly and connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Connect a tachometer and timing light to the engine and adjust the ignition timing.

  1. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

REMOVING IGNITER WITHOUT REMOVING DISTRIBUTOR
  1. Remove the distributor cap, rotor and di-electric insulator covers. Disconnect the red and yellow wires from the coil and the pink, white and black wires from the igniter.
  2. Remove the igniter. It may be necessary to mark and rotate the distributor to gain access to the igniter retaining screws. The timing should be checked after the distributor is returned to the mark.

To install:
  1. Install the new igniter using the two new retaining screws.
  2. Twist the pick-up coil wires together, install the white wire first then pink and black wires to their original locations. Make sure the wires do not touch the housing generator or advance plate.
  3. Route the red and yellow wires from the igniter so they do not contact moving parts. Connect the red wire to the right coil terminal (with the brown wire) and the yellow wire to the left terminal (with the blue wire). Replace the covers, rotor and cap.
  4. Connect a tachometer and timing light to the engine and adjust the ignition timing.

We've replaced the distributor cap and rotor in our 1985 Chevy C10 305 V8 and still have to fire TO the plugs. It won't start


This is a one piece distributor. It has the coil and pickup sensor all built in. Check and see if you have 12 volts on the large red wire that plugs into the cap while the key is on. (The other wire is for a tachometer if you have one). If you have power and there is no spark from your ignition wires, your pickup module is bad in the distributer. Very rarely have I seen a failed coil.

22r-E, 3vz-E And 3f-E Engines

  1. Warm up the engine, then turn it OFF. Connect a timing light to the engine following the manufacturer_s instructions.
  2. Connect a tachometer to both battery terminals. Connect the tachometer probe to the IG-terminal in the check connector box. The check connector box is located next to the underhood fuse and relay box on trucks and 4Runner's; for Land Cruisers, the check connector box is on the firewall. Use the correct adapter to insure a tight fit on the terminal. Not all tachometers, particularly older ones are electrically compatible with this system. Read instructions for your unit before using.

3. Start the engine and run it at idle. Check the idle speed on the tachometer; adjust it to specification if necessary.

4. At the check connector, use a small jumper wire to short the connector at terminal T or TE1 and terminal E1, of the DLC1 as shown. Special service tool (SST) 09843-18020 or its equivalent can be used for this also.

This jumper will be used repeatedly during diagnostics in later sections. Take the time to make a proper jumper with correct terminals or probes. It's a valuable special tool for very low cost.
  1. Check the idle speed, then check the ignition timing. The 22R-E should read 5° BTDC, 3VZ-FE should read 10° BTDC and the 3F-E should read 7° BTDC. All of these readings are at idle.

  1. Loosen the distributor pinch bolt just enough that the distributor can be turned. Aim the timing light at the marks on the crankshaft pulley (or the drive plate on 3F-E) and slowly turn the distributor until the correct timing mark aligns with the pointer. Tighten the distributor pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the jumper wire or special service tool (SST) from the DLC1.
  3. Check that the ignition timing advances. At idle the 22R-E should read 10°-14° BTDC, 3VZ-FE should read 8° BTDC, and the 3F-E should read 12° BTDC.
  4. Shut the engine OFF and remove the timing light and tachometer leads.

The third terminal is a signal wire for the tachometer. Any Kubota industrial distributor or dealer can supply this connector. Use their distributor locator to find one near you.

My 88 olds cutlass supreme FWD will not start. I have replaced the ignition module and ecm computer. I am getting fuel but no spark. The engine turns over fine.It just won't start. where do I go next?


If the engine won't start, perform a spark test as described earlier. This will narrow the problem area down considerably. If no spark occurs, check for the presence of normal battery voltage at the battery terminal (BAT) in the distributor cap. The ignition switch must be in the on position for this test. Either a voltmeter or a test light may be used for this test. Connect the test light wire to ground and the probe end at the BAT terminal at the distributor. If the light comes on, you have voltage to the distributor. If the light fails to come on, this indicates an open circuit in the ignition primary wiring leading to the distributor. In this case, you will have to check wiring continuity back to the ignition switch using a test light. If there is battery voltage at the BAT terminal, but no spark at the plugs, then the problem lies within the distributor assembly.
If the trouble has been narrowed down to the units within the distributor, the following tests can help pinpoint the defective component. An ohmmeter with both high and low ranges should be used. These tests are made with the cap assembly removed. and the battery wire disconnected. If a tachometer is connected to the TACH terminal, disconnect it before making these tests.
  1. Connect a ohmmeter between the TACH and BAT terminals in the distributor cap. The primary coil resistance should be less than 1 ohms.
  2. To check the coil secondary resistance, connect an ohmmeter between the rotor button and the BAT terminal. Note the reading. Connect the ohmmeter between the rotor button and the TACH terminal. Note the reading. The resistance in both cases should be between 6,000 and 30,000 ohms. Be sure to test between the rotor button and both the BAT and TACH terminals.
  3. Replace the coil only if the readings in Step 1 and Step 2 are infinite.
