It is either a loose linkage for the transmission, or it is a bad solenoid inside the transmission for the reverse gear.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level to make sure it is topped off?

Also, has the transmission been flushed and filled within the last 30,000 mi. interval?

Sometimes a $100 procedure can fix the problem. If the linkage is determined to be loose and needs to be replaced, the fluid can be changed then.

Otherwise, a rebuild or replacement of the transmission is indicated to get proper functioning of reverse.

Hi. Have you feel that the clutch is slipping? if none then this could be a pressure plate problem. something broken, or the clutch friction plate breaking up. pressure plate not releasing the drive properly.

No reverse gear

Loss of reverse is a blatant signal that the transmission has failed and needs to be rebuilt.

My vehicle will not move when I put it in gear

Are you sure that your gears are actually engaging. Do you feel resistance (however slight) when you select a gear including reverse gear. If it is a manual gearbox, then either the gears are not actually being selected and that could be something like a broken linkage or the clutch is not releasing when you let your foot off the pedal. The clutch problem could be rectified by adjusting the cable, if fitted, or the actuating mechanism is stuck in and not releasing the clutch. Does the pedal feel soft or in an unusual position.
It will be a dirty job to find and rectify the problem so may well be best left to a mechanic.

Is there a pin in the transmissio n or transfer case that can come loose to make it not shift into reverse

There's no pin as such. An automatic gearbox does have solenoids for operating valves.
A valve can become stuck.

Reverse gear is first gear - when you select reverse a 'cog' moves onto first gear to reverse the direction of the gearbox output shaft - giving you reverse.

It may well be a stuck valve. Try selecting reverse a few times after the car has been run and the fluid is hot. A stuck valve (in the transmission) may free itself

Nissan largo 1994 AUTO ...when selecting a gear with lever it shift into it smoothly all 3 foward gears work fine you can hear and feel transmission doing it job , but when selecting reverse it goes into...

Before starting with the hard ones, start with the usual culprit like fluid levels and the condition if it needs repairing. If there are debris in the system it could clog the valves for the reverse gear which makes it difficult or impossible to engage. This unfortunately would need inspection of the transmission from the outside. Check the linkages and the lines and look for leaks to inspecting the internal parts especially the gears.

IT STARTED ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO, SHIFT INTO REVERSE, TRUCK WILL NOT MOVE IN REVERSE. IT HAS ALL FORWARDS GEARS, I PUT IN 4X4 AND IT STILL WILL NOT MOVE IN REVERSE. HELP

This is caused by the gear oil, there is none in the gear box, so get a transmission fluid and fill the gear box with it, run the engine idle for some minutes and then try select the gear.

I have a problem with the reserve on my car sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't when I can't get reserve first and second gear is in reverse position on Volskwagen Passet 1994

pardo me for asking but is there not a method of selection of rverse gear by either pressing or lifting the gear lever so it will move over further so as to select reverse? or a lift up circular boss on gear lever itself that has to be lifted then reverse position can be selected ? hope this helps ?

Reverse light doesn't light up every

The travel in the switch has probably increased in the time you have had the car. The switch- or shifting linkage directly related to the reverse light switch- may have some adjustment left. If not probably a new switch would fix it.
