This is to remove the Harmonic Balancer

    Remove Harmonic:

    Bulletin No.: 57-61-32

    Date: October. 1995

    Subject:

Section 6:t - Engine Mechanical - Revised Crankshaft
    Balancer Service Procedure and

    pedal Tool

    Models:

1995-96 Buick LeSabre Park Avenue Regl Riviera

    1995 Chevrolet Lumina AP\

    1995-96 Chevrolet Camaro

    1995 Oldsmobile Silhouette

1995-96 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight, Ninety Eight

    1995 Pontiac Trans Sport

    1995-96 Pontiac Bonneville. Firebird

    with 3800 Engine (VINs K. L, 1 - RPOs L36, L27, L67)

The procedure used to service the crankshaft balancer has
    been revised. Use the

following procedure to properly service the crankshaft
    balancer on the 1995-96 3800

    engines.

There has been a running design change in the crankshaft
    balancer. This change affects

3800 engines built late in the 1995 model year (L27 andL36)
and all of1996 model year (L36

and L67). Refer to the appropriate section in the service
manual it you have the previous

design crankshaft balancer. Refer to the following procedure
    using (3 38197-MOD) for the

revised design crankshaft balancer The crankshaft balancer
    designs can be easily

    identified by the following:

    Previous Crankshaft Balancer Design

    I Image

Has a dimple stamped in the face of the crankshaft balancer.
Figure 1 View B. This dimple

aids in the alignment of 38197-2 and also identifies the
    crankshaft key location in

relation to the slot in the crankshaft balancer. The special
tool (3 38197) and the service

procedure used to service the previous design crankshaft
    balancer have not been revised.

Refer to applicable service manual and section for correct
    service procedures.

    Revised Crankshaft Balancer Design

Has a round hole drilled in the face of the crankshaft
balancer. Figure 1 View A. This hole

does not aid in the alignment of 38197-2, like the dimple on
    the previous designed

crankshaft balancer. The hole is used to identify the
crankshaft key location in relation to

the slot in the crankshaft balancer. The special tool (J
38197) has been revised to reflect

the design changes and the new tool is J 38197-MOD. (If you
already have J 38197 it is

necessary to only order the 3 38 197-MOD). The revised
    crankshaft balancer requires the

use ofthree bolts (J 38197-4), these bolts are 1/4 inch
longer than the previous design. J

38197-4 are silver in color while the previous tool uses
    black bolts.

J 381974 should not be used to service the previous design
    crankshaft balancer as

damage to the balancer may occur by using the longer bolts.

The revised crankshaft balancer may have burrs on the
slotted access holes that do not

allow the proper alignment of 38197. Lf burrs are present,
remove them by using one of

    the following methods:

File access hole using rat-tail file in proper location.

: ]1 access hole using dull in proper location.

.. Bend access hole using screw driver in proper location.

Revised Crankshaft Balancer Service Procedure Figures 1, 2
    and 3

    Tools Required:

    J 36660 Torque Angle Meter

    J 37096 Flywheel Holding Tool

    J 38197-A and J 38197-MOD Crankshaft Balancer Puller

    J 38197-A Includes:

    J 38197-1 Pilot Screw

    J38l97-2PullerPlate

    J 38197-3 Puller Screws (Black)

    J 38197-4 Puller Screws (Silver)

    J 38197-MOD includes:

    J 38197-4 Puller Screws (Silver)

    Remove or Disconnect

    Image

    1. Hold flywheel using J 37096 (Figure 2).

    2. Crankshaft balancer bolt.

    _image

    3. Crankshaft balancer using J 38197-A and J 38197-MOD
    (Figure 3).

    a. Invert J 38197-2 so that the leg of the tool is facing
    away from the crankshaft

    balancer.

    b. Install the silver screws (J 38197-4) to crankshaft
    balancer.

    c. Turn J 38197-1 to remove crankshaft balancer from
    crankshaft.

    d. Remove J 38 197-1, 2 and 4 from crankshaft balancer.

    Important:

The crankshaft balancer is serviced as an assembly. Do not
    attempt to separate pulley

    from balancer hub.

    Install or Connect

    1. Lubricate crankshaft and inside of balancer with clean
    engine oil.

    2. Crankshaft balancer using the small hole to aid in the
    alignment of crankshaft key.

    3. Crankshaft balancer bolt.

    Hold flywheel using J 37096.

    Tighten

    Tighten bolt to 150 N-m (111 lb. ft.) + 76 using J 3666W

Did you do a
Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn ?
The crankshaft position system (CKP) variation compensating values are stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) non-volatile memory after a learn procedure has been performed. If the actual crankshaft position system variation is not within the crankshaft position system variation compensating values stored in the PCM, DTC P0300 may set, refer to Diagnostic Aids for DTC P0300 .
The Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure should be performed if any of the following conditions are true:
• DTC P1336 is set
• The PCM has been replaced
• The engine has been replaced
• The crankshaft has been replaced
• The crankshaft harmonic balancer has been replaced
• The crankshaft position sensor has been replaced

How do I replace the crankshaft sensor on my 2001 Buick Regal? Both knocksensors?

You best bet is take to a ASE certified repair shop or a GM dealer ! When replacing crank sensor a special procedure has to be done with a scan tool .
Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn
The Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure should be performed if any of the following conditions are true:
?€¢
DTC P1336 is set

?€¢
The PCM has been replaced

?€¢
The engine has been replaced

?€¢
The crankshaft has been replaced

?€¢
The crankshaft harmonic balancer has been replaced

?€¢
The crankshaft position sensor has been replaced
Important: Set the vehicle parking brake and block the drive wheels when performing the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure in order to prevent personal injury. Release the throttle when the engine reaches the SECOND fuel cut off. Leaving the throttle open during the fuel cut-off will allow the engine to decel at an even rate. Once the learn procedure is completed, the PCM will return the engine control to the operator and the engine will respond to the throttle position.
Important: The scan tool crankshaft position system variation learn function will be inhibited if engine coolant temperature is less than 70?°C (158?°F). Allow the engine to warm to at least 70?°C (158?°F) before attempting the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure.
The scan tool crankshaft position system variation learn function will be inhibited if any powertrain DTCs other than DTC P1336 are set before or during the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure. Diagnose and repair any DTCs if set.
The crankshaft position system variation learn function will be inhibited if the PCM detects a malfunction involving the camshaft position signal circuit, the 3X reference circuit, or the 18X reference circuit.
?€¢
If the scan tool indicates a problem with the cam signal, refer to DTC P0341 .

?€¢
If the scan tool indicates a problem with the 3X crank signal, refer to DTC P1374 .

?€¢
If the scan tool indicates a problem with the 18X crank signal, refer to DTC P0336 .

Now why do you want to replace these thing's ? mite be able to save you some time an money. Do you have a check engine light lit ? Codes ? Does it start an run ?

Bolt on crankshaft to remove clockwise or counterclockwise?

prev.gif next.gif Crankshaft Damper/Pulley counterclockwise to remove pulley:
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Remove the drive belts from the crankshaft damper.
  2. Remove the crankshaft damper-to-crankshaft bolt. Hold the crankshaft stationary by placing a suitable tool in the ring gear teeth on the flywheel. Fig. 1: Use a breaker bar to remove the crankshaft damper bolt 89613g41.gif
Fig. 2: The crankshaft can be held stationary by using a suitable tool to place between the flywheel teeth 89613g42.gif
Fig. 3: Be sure to lubricate the threads of the crankshaft damper bolt to obtain a proper torque reading 89613pi9.jpg

  3. Remove the crankshaft damper from the crankshaft by pulling it straight off the shaft. A puller may be required to remove the damper from the shaft. Be careful not to lose the woodruff key when removing the crankshaft damper. Fig. 4: The crankshaft damper can sometimes be pulled from the shaft by hand 89613pj1.jpg
Fig. 5: A puller may be required to remove the crankshaft damper 89613g40.gif
NOTE: If working on a VE30DE or VQ30DE engine, it would be a good idea to replace the crankshaft oil seal when the crankshaft damper is removed. Fig. 6: The timing chain cover oil seal should be replaced whenever the crankshaft damper is removed; this seal is leaking severely 89613pj2.jpg
Fig. 7: This crankshaft damper may have a problem sealing properly due to the groove that was worn into it from the seal 89613pj4.jpg
    To install:
  4. Install the crankshaft damper onto the shaft, making sure the woodruff key is in place. Dip the damper bolt in fresh oil and torque the crankshaft damper-to-crankshaft bolt to the following specifications:
    • VG30E engine — 90–98 ft.lbs. (123–132 Nm.)
    • VE30DE engine — 123–130 ft.lbs. (167–177 Nm.)
    • VQ30DE engine — 29–36 ft.lbs. (39–49 Nm.) followed by 60–66°clockwise angle torque
  5. Install the drive belts to the crankshaft damper; be sure to properly set belt tension.
