not necessary to remove the hose just the whole cylinder off the bell housing and place it aside. IT saves having to bleed the system after putting the gearbox back

1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. Refer to Manual Transaxle Assembly, removal & installation.
2. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line (6) from the bleeder assembly (2).
3. Disconnect and remove the bleeder assembly (2) from the clutch slave cylinder (3).
4. Remove the slave cylinder-to-clutch bell housing bolts (4) and remove the slave cylinder (3) from the transaxle.

so ast step 1, you then turn to that page.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
2. Remove the splash shields and drain the transaxle fluid.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
4. Remove the engine appearance cover.
5. Remove the air intake assembly.
6. Unplug the speed sensor connector.
7. Disconnect the back-up lamp switch.
8. Remove the shift cables from the bracket clips.
9. Disconnect the shift selector and crossover cable from the levers. Remove the cables and secure them out of the way.
10. Remove the slave cylinder hose from the bracket.
11. Remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body.
12. Remove the throttle body support bracket.
13. Remove the upper bell housing bolts.
14. Remove the starter mounting bolts and secure the starter out of the way.
15. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
16. Loosen the left-upper transaxle mount through-bolt.
17. Remove the transaxle mount
18. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
19. bolts.

Do you have a hydraulic operated clutch? The slave cylinder for a hydraulic clutch would be on or sometimes inside the bell housing. Some ford and chevy trucks put the slave cylinder in a very difficult to reach place-the transmission has to be removed to service the slave cylinder. Most cars have the slave cylinder mounted on the outside of the bell housing. If they leak, replace or rebuild, although those internal slave cylinders I think can only be replaced.

The heading is replace slave cylinder of 2002 vw transporter. Why would you be removing the tranny to do this job as the slave cylinder is on the outside of the bell housing. IT is normal to remove the bell housing with the tranny as they are normally one unit as the bolts are inside and cannot be reached until the tranny is on the ground. Having said that, if there are 4 bolts in a flange outside the tranny proper and the bell housing is tightened with these bolts then you can remove the tranny separate to the bell housing.

It is threaded on, on some they are press fit and come with the line when you buy the slave cylinder.

this is for rear wheel drive only front wheel drives require removing axle shat and dropping tie rod end and lower ball joint to get tranny out. If you start this I will give tork setting when I know what you have as it is a lot of work to type this out.

First disconnect the battery, inside the cab pull shifter boot off and remove snap ring to remove shifter, next get a block to go under engine remove drive line bolts and be sure E-brake is set and block the wheels, next put bolts from driveline into the read differential in order so you will be able to find them next disconnect the two starter bolts from the starter and tie starter up as not to allow the starter weight to hang on the wires. Remove two bolts holding slave cylinder on let hang off the side do not lose the shaft out of slave. Next remove the transmission mount bolt out next pull four bolts out of transmission cross member, next remove 5 bolts out of bell housing now get a baggie and a couple of rubber bands and pull drive shaft slide baggie over the transmission tail shaft and put on rubber band on bag to keep from losing fluid move drive shaft out of the way. Next disconnect the Speedo cable and wiring harness the reverse switch is at the top so will have to drop the tranny down to keep from breaking wire. Once you have a gap between the transmission and engine put block under back of engine slide the transmission out let the front drop down then lift up on rear of transmission and slide the cross member out of the way. Next slide tranny out of the way next remove the 6 bolts on the clutch assembly turning each bolt 1 and a ½ turns each till clutch is loose remove the clutch pressure plate and the throw out bearing, remove flywheel take to machine shop and have surfaced, replace the clutch plate pressure plate and the throw out bearing reinstall in reverse if you see any oil leaks replace seals, also replace rear transmission seal now if you don’t it will leak next after it is back together be sure you put new fluid in the transmission and bleed the slave cylinder.

start off bt taking off your shifter, then disconnect the wires,cables, and the 4x4 linkage, the drop out both drive shafts, support the tranny and transfer case then remove the tranny mount. take out the bolts on the bell housing that go into the motor the pull out the slave cylinder,and the last thing to remove is the cross member that holds up your tranny. after that slide the tranny back about 6 inches tor until it's free from the block and lower it down. after you get it on the ground pull of out clutch fork that is in the bell housing of your tranny, pull the bearing off the shaft that is in the bell housing as well. and last but not least take off the clutch plate ans the clutch disk that is on the fly wheel on your block. and i cant stress this enough be careful when you pull the tranny out and make sure it will not fall on you. so please do it carefully. And take your time.

I thought the 4.9 has a conventional slave cylinder mounted to the exterior of the bell housing?
I am not sure about the 4.9 but I know the 5.0 has an internal slave cylinder, and unfortunately you must remove the transmission to replace it. The slave cylinder is mounted around the input shaft in a complete circle and there is no other way to remove it. You say your transmission is a 5 speed so I am pretty sure the slave cylinder is an internal one.

Have you crawled under it and taken a look at it?

The clutch slave cylinder on this model is located inside the transmission bell housing. You would have to pull the tranny to see it.
Bleeding the slave cylinder is a fairly simple process.
Underneath the vehicle on the driver side you will see two hydraulic lines going into the transmission where the tranny connects to the engine. If you have trouble locating just follow the hydraulic line from the master cylinder on the firewall.
One of these lines is actually sticking out of the tranny and has a bleeder valve on the end.
You will need a 9/16 box end wrench and a 5/16 or 1/4 inch box end wrench and someone with you to press the clutch pedal while you are under the vehicle.

1. Top off the master cylinder with clean brake fluid. Also, MAKE SURE you keep the fluid level in the master cylinder topped off during this process. You may need to have a second helper to take care of this so you don't have to keep climbing out from underneath.

2.Hold the line with the 9/16 and loosen the bleeder valve a couple turns or until fluid begins to drain. Have someone SLOWLY depress the clutch pedal to the floor and hold it down to the floor until you tighten the bleeder valve back up. MAKE SURE YOU ARE OUT OF THE WAY OF THE SQUIRTING FLUID WHEN THE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED!!

3. Once you are sure the valve is tight, have them pump the clutch pedal a couple times . Repeat step two until the pedal has a full stroke.

The hydraulic cylinder is in the bell housing. When you separate the motor and tranny, you will see it as a unit with the throw-out bearing. Take the hydraulic line off before you start. You will have to bleed it when you are done.
