I have a 99 rav4 and the same thing happened. it was a synchronizer problem

There is a TSB regarding this problem. It is very common. It requires replacing the synchro, hub fifth gear and bearing plate. It can be done with the trans in the vehicle and takes 2-3 hours.

This could be a cracked housing, a worn selector fork, a worn gear, worn linkage, any number of things, and really the only sure fire way to find out is to let a mechanic get "hands on" with it, but unless its just a worn linkage then the cheapest repair would be a used gearbox.

Most likely it's the selector fork for the 5th gear that isn't adjusted properly (or even bent / worn)
This would mean the gears are only effectively 1/2 in mesh, and not locked in place with a detent ball as per normal.

This can be confirmed by the feel of the gearlever. With the clutch down, there should be resistance to go from each gear back to the neutral position. In your case, there won't be any on the 5th.

Gearbox needs to come out and be opened to rectify the problem I'm afraid.

Hope this helps you.

Just remembered another obvious point -

Could also be the detent spring for the 5th selector shaft is broken -or missing. THIS may be accessable from outside without gearbox removal.

Sounds like the synchronizers in the trans are starting to fail ask her it it has become harder to shift between certain gears (i.e. 1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd, 3rd-4th, or 4th-5th) does the clutch slip at all or does the clutch pedal feel different? if its a hydrolic clutch (almost if not all newer cars have hydrolic clutches) the clutch master cylinder may be low it looks like a small brake master cylinder (the clutch master cylinder is generaly round) and usualy is located directly under it, next to it or offset to the right OR left and located under the brake master cylinder the clutch will usualy take DOT 3 brake fluid or hydrolic clutch fluid it will tell you what type it takes right on the cap

if it isn't low on fliud and the clutch isn't slipping or not releasing/ engaging properly, its time for a new or rebuilt trans

1st and 5th gear jumps out of it's position. Revers gear do's not engage gear from time to time

if this is a manual gearbox then its the indent springs in the selector rod movement inside the gearbox and this will involve removing the gearbox if i have correctly located the fault ,but without the make and model of vehicle i cannot say for certain as it could be the gearchange mechanism movement inside the cars cab and if tis cable then a outer sheaf on a cable could be loose and come out of its crimped holder

5th gear keeps popping out on my rav 4 its a 99 modle what can i do and how much would it cost to repair?

chances are, that the sincronizers are going out, the problem with this is that fifth and sixth gears in most trannys are final drive gears, which mean a complete rebuild of the trans, any where from 500$ to 2200$, or a used one from a salvage yard, 250$ to 500$, plus cost of instalation.

worn gearbox or engine mounts allowing the gearbox to move and unlatch the shift linkage from its position, or the shift linkage is mal-adjusted and not properly engaged in 5th gear at all.

There may be a knuckle joint that can be adjusted to give correct shifter operation, it may be out of adjustment. GM cars are prone to this after reversing uphill in a manual car, your Nissan may be similar. The engine moves away from the area of the shift lever and pulls the knuckle joint out further than it is supposed to be and causes the gears not to enage securely any more.

2001 Rav4 gearbox problem.

gears slipping out of mesh indicates
1 ---not properly engaged on selection
2--- failing output shaft bearings
3-- worm slip joint bush in the extension housing not maintaining alignment of the output shaft
The gear engagement is by dog teeth in the synchro ring for 5th gear and if that connection alignment is not maintained exactly by bearings and bushes the dog teeth move out of engagement at each revolution
AS reverse gear operates through a moveable spur cut gear to engage the counter shaft and the out put shaft and you are having trouble with reverse as well , indicates the out put shaft rear bearing is suspect or is moving in the box housing
