OK, flex tubes are notorious for leaking exhaust over time due to the overflexing of the tube due to engine mounts not being strong enough over the service life of the vehicle.

One solution, is to take the car to a custom exhaust shop and have them fashion a sleeved exhaust that will not break as easily as the original equipment.

For instance, in my area, we have Midas or Meineke Exhaust centers that can fashion a custom exhaust for the vehicle solving the problem for the life of the pipes, anyway.

Good luck on fixing this problem.

Take it to an independent (not a chain) muffler shop and have it replaced. I'm guessing around $200. Also, have the engine mounts checked. If they're worn, the engine rocks too much and breaks the flex pipe.

most likely exhaust leak, they were popular for the egr tube to leak, you can hear more under the hood vs standing beside the car, tube can be purchased from dealership, but to note, most exhaust places inspect for free to give a more accurate estimate, but yes sounds like exhaust

good luck

My 2001 Ford Focus had the oil changed by an idiot who did something besides change the oil. It ran perfectly prior to the "oil change". It was missing, and exhaust smell was almost...

free pdf repair manual ford focus
copy and paste into search line

my guess
oil changer
spilt the oil filling the motor up and it ran on to the exhaust
if rocker cover gasket isnt leaking
oil smell will go away after engine gets up to temp

degreased the engine bay with something cheap
then hosed it down with a hose and water went everywhere

firing order for 4 cyl typical is 1342
the leads will be to length from dissy so its hard to mess up

water may have condensed under the dissy cap or coil plug wires arcing in the spark plug tubes

all needs to be dried out

a dry rag or metho not wd 40

car should run ok after the engine bay is dry

DTC P0411 - Secondary Air Injection System: Incorrect flow detected

Then check all the vacuum lines against the vacuum map on the VECI label under the hood. It's common for the original plastic lines to get brittle & crack, or they can be melted by an exhaust leak from the crossover tube on V8s, but if you have an I6, it doesn't have that tube.

Check IAC and IAC circuit. Check Secondary Air Injection pump, valve, circuit and hoses for leaks, blockages.

Here can find some diagrams:

Hope helps.
