Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora

I broke the belt on the front of the engine on the right side if you are facing the the engine and i was wondering what belt that was and how expensive it is to fix it

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Because serpentine belts use a spring loaded tensioner for adjustment, belt replacement tends to be somewhat easier than it used to be on engines where accessories were pivoted and bolted in place for tension adjustment. Basically, all belt replacement involves is to pivot the tensioner to loosen the belt, then slide the belt off of the pulleys. The two most important points are to pay CLOSE attention to the proper belt routing (since serpentine belts tend to be "snaked'' all different ways through the pulleys) and to be sure the V-ribs are properly seated in all the pulleys. Although belt routing diagrams have been included in this section, the first places you should check for proper belt routing are the labels in your engine compartment. These should include a belt routing diagram which may reflect changes made during a production run.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety. This will help assure that no one mistakenly cranks the engine over with your hands between the pulleys, and that the cooling fan cannot activate while servicing the belt(s). NOTE: Take a good look at the installed belt and make a note of the routing. Before removing the belt, be sure the routing matches that of the belt routing label or one of the diagrams in this book. If for some reason a diagram does not match (you may not have the original engine or it may have been modified), carefully note the changes on a piece of paper.
  2. For tensioners equipped with a 1?2 in. (13mm) square hole, insert the drive end of a large breaker bar into the hole. Use the breaker bar to pivot the tensioner away from the drive belt. For tensioners not equipped with this hole, use the proper-sized socket and breaker bar (or a large handled wrench) on the tensioner idler pulley center bolt to pivot the tensioner away from the belt. This will loosen the belt sufficiently so it can be pulled off of one or more of the pulleys. It is usually easiest to carefully pull the belt out from under the tensioner pulley itself.
  3. Once the belt is off one of the pulleys, gently pivot the tensioner back into position. DO NOT allow the tensioner to snap back, as this could damage the tensioner's internal parts.
  4. Now finish removing the belt from the other pulleys and remove it from the engine. To install:
  5. While referring to the proper routing diagram (which you identified earlier), begin to route the belt over the pulleys, leaving whichever pulley you first released it from for last.
  6. Once the belt is mostly in place, carefully pivot the tensioner and position the belt over the final pulley. As you begin to allow the tensioner back into contact with the belt, run your hand around the pulleys and be sure the belt is properly seated in the ribs. If not, release the tension and seat the belt.
  7. Once the belt is installed, take another look at all the pulleys to double check your installation.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable, then start and run the engine to check belt operation.
  9. Once the engine has reached normal operating temperature, turn the ignition OFF and check that the belt tensioner arrow is within the proper adjustment.

Pull your Serpentine belt, remove the Cam Belt Cover, (it may be advantageous to remove front wheel in the Cam Belt side) Remove the timing belt and time the engine to specifications, make sure you are on #1TDC, remove the tensioner and replace. if there is and Idler pulley replace that as well. You can use Spray Carb Cleaner to clean the pulleys before replacing the belt. Note, you may have to also remove the Harmonic Balancer and pulleys from the crankshaft.

Depends on the engine that is in that car but there are usually at least 2. One is very long and it called the serpentine belt. The other usually runs power steering or air conditioning.

How to tell the left head from the right head


The left head is located on the left side of the motor, when you're sitting in the vehicle. When you're looking from the engine compartment directly at the motor, the left head/side would be just the opposite. facing the motor with the belts looking at you, the left head would be to your right side. The number one piston/cylinder is the head wher the front of the head is closest to you when standing and looking at the belts.

How to put a belt on


You put a 3/8" ratchet in the tensioner arm. Looking at the side of the engine to the passenger side of the van, the tensioner is at the top of the engine towards the back. Twist the tensioner to allow the old belt to be removed, Install the new belt following the same path. There should be a sticker on the belt guard by the power steering pump. The belt will fit smoothly on all the pulleys. Pay attentions as some pulleys have the belt groves facing in, some have the belt groves facing out.

IMPORTANT - When you do this, put all the keys for the car in your pocket so no one can try to start it.

Is your car left hand drive? Just to know if the engine timing is facing the right side. If it is left hand drive and engine face the right side of the car,surely you will have a water pump leak and you have to strip the timing belt to renew it,

If you are talking oil and or trans then those tubes are located to the left and right rear of the engine as you face the front of the engine, Trans is to the left rear and oil to the front or right side of the engine, Keep in mind that if you have a front wheel drive engine then the front of that engine is facing the passengers side wheel well or the right front tire of the car.

Belt diagram 1997 toyota corolla? alternator belt replacement?


The 97 Corolla has three accessory belts. The alternator belt is the one you see when you look down on the passenger side standing near the front of the engine compartment. If fits over the alternator and the engine pulley. The belt beneath it is the a/c belt (if the car has a/c). It fits over the engine pulley and the a/c compressor. The power steering belt is toward the rear of the engine compartment, on the same side. It fits around the engine pulley and the power steering pump.

Replacing the alternator belt is not too difficult. Standing in front of the car and facing towards the rear, loosen the locking bolt under the right side of the alternator. Then loosen the alternator hinge bolt on top of the alternator. Now you are ready to loosen the alternator belt tensioner adjustment bolt, accessed under the alternator from the front. Turn the tensioner until the old belt is loose enough to remove, then turn it further so that the new belt will go on easily. Replace the belt and re-tension until you have about 1/4 in. to 1/8 in. of play in the belt, tighten the lock bolt and the hinge bolt, and run the engine. If the belt squeals it means you need more tension, but do not overtension. Recheck it after a few days.

Timing belt is broken, how to tell damage w/o teardown


Compression test. Typically, when a timing belt breaks, some of the valves hit the piston on the compression stroke.
If you are very lucky, you might avoid rebuilding the head. However, odds are that this is what you are facing.

Water leaking and not starting


if the water is coming from the right that is the water pump which is driven by the timing belt .check timing belt for damage if it is broke you will have a damage engine and you will need to change the water pump .it can be a very expensive joob
