Question about 2008 Mazda Tribute

2 Answers

My 08 Tribute didn't start today. I got a jump and it was fine for the next 3 starts. Then it struggled again to get started.

Makes sense I guess, but I want to make sure those are the only possibilities.

  • claudialong Nov 05, 2010

No, I should probably do that first. What if this happens after I change the battery?

You have a relay going bad or, and this is more likely, a cell going bad on the battery. Replace the battery and your problem should be resolved.

There is never a single possible answer on most of these when you are dealing with electronics in a vehicle but I don't blame you for wanting to try because you see lights and volts and it seems the battery is good. The problem isn't volts though, with a dead cell your not getting enough amperage to get the starter to engage which is common. The easiest and fastest way to be sure about the battery being bad, assuming you don't have a cell tester in the garage and don't want to buy one, go to Auto Zone or Pep Boys and ask them the test the battery. They will, at most locations, remove the battery for free and test it right there in the store. I have a 2005 Escape, as you know the Escape and Tribune are built in the same plant just use different lines for assembly, and other than having the battery go out in them I'll be honest, I haven't heard of anything else that is as common a problem for the vehicle. It could certainly be a faulty Voltage regulator on the Alternator but that will be identified when you test the battery. I've never had a problem at Auto Zone even when I asked the to test it and then went to Walmart to buy the new one Pep Boys and Advance Auto are pretty good about it as well.

My best guess without being able to see the car is that the battery hard wiring is faulty.

You need to check both the condition, routing and security of the battery negative and positive leads.
You also need to check the security and condition of any additional earth leads which connect the engine to the chassis/body.

My egr valve burnt and has been replaced but my mazda tribute still wont start

Your alternator is not charging the battery. Remove it and have it tested at your local parts store. Fully charge the battery with a charger. If the alternator tests good, reinstall it and start the car. Check the voltage at the battery and also at the alternator on the big charge wire terminal. Report the voltages here for additional troubleshooting steps.

Sounds like a battery to me. The cold doesnt drain the battery it just makes it more difficult to produce enough energy to crank the car. If the battery is weak already, the cold just makes it worse. Replace it and move on!
