No you will not damage your car. Repair usually involves replacing or adjusting the brake light switch, neutral safety switch, fuse, or shift lock solenoid.

However, people have broken the release button by overuse.

I got a 2008 Suzuki swift rs415, and haven't driven for a week. When we unlock the swift the tailgate door wont open ( its like its still locked. can I ask why and how to fix the problem

You may have to call a dealer .Their is a manual release I think its a law .However you may cut through the carpet on the inside of the door a small hole to fit a screw driver inside to turn the latch
The access point will be at the latch handle om the inside .

you remove the snap ring and press it out.

Locked into park gear, cannot shift out of it...

the console! look carefully or read the operators guide, its there.
there is defeat lever(hidden). slide cover, open , slide switch to off, bingo.
this is an electro mechanical lockout. and means your lock solenoid is dead. there are many reason and all are covered in the FSM.
$4 to read that.
or mitchels
or buy a FSM on ebay.
ever notice you can not shift car key off?
its a safety feature. here is mine.
it works in conjuntion with the brake, so the operator dont run over kids.\
note the 2 fuses that can kill it.
this is mine, yours will be simular in function.
you have 2 choices, fix it or defeat it.
