Question about Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Cruise will not engage on car - merc. C200 auto 1996(P) 4dr saloon. worked fine until last years mot. thought mot tester had yanked too hard at lever switch one side of steering mistaking it for indicator switch but that is only suspicion. took it local merc. dealers (have a poor reputation) they promised to test cruise in a day or two fobbed me off for 2 weeks eventually washed car and charged me sixty quid saying there was nothing technically wrong with cruise operating mechanisms.(no way of knowing ift hey actually tested it ) their workshop clerk even sugested that because car had alloy wheels cruise wont engage if the weight of the back wheels was not right. but its had those alloys for years and worked fine. put brand new tyres ( it needed) cruise still wont engage. took it to local merc specialists and they could not be bothered checking it. please help -car is on very good nick and drives as good as new.

Check the vacumn pipes first, then start at the begining and remove the shroud around steering wheel and check for a feed to the switch ,your problem with the dealer is that its too old and they dont want to know as their grease monkeys think that because they work on mercs they are special when in actual fact the opposite is true only one knows anything and the rest are young lads their to change the oil .Most dealers are like this in fact especialy merc ones ,with some jumped up receptionist in his blue coat with a merc symbol on it trying to tell the customer that some unskilled person had made an illegal entry on the OBDII and caused the immobilisor to cut in shutting everything off without knowing i was standing behind him.I have forgotton more than this jump suited idiot will ever know .Right anyway check for power to the switch then go from their ,the power runs to relay but iam not sure where this is but under the bonnet i suspect and this relay is connected via the brake switch and throttle to shut it off if you brake or accelerate ,Well reading your post again the receptionist reckons that the wheels are wrong ?? excuse me while i go for a good laugh and ring a few other mechanics to share the joke .Well nearly lost my thirty minutes to answer a question their but greasy **** and sliperery simon have both had a good laugh but its nothing they both havent heard before about receptionists and simon reckons that all ford receptionists all look alike and are clones ,tall skinny with glasses and self opinionated .While **** reckons that the ford rejects are taken on by peugeot dealers .Anyway none of us have a proper idea what could be wrong exactly other than check for power to the switch first then work from their and try to get a haynes manual with the wiring diagrams ,answering questions on here is great for learning from other mechanics who answer questions to hide from the missus and one thing that often plays up is the speedo sensor on the passenger side drive on top of the diff housing ,evidently they have three wires on some of them so the speedo still works but the cruise doesnt as its not picking up the speed ,something packs up with the coil windings ,but before we get technical check for power to the switch first .heard about the latest mercs ?? the bonnet is sealed and can only be opened with the merc diagnostic equipment ,so even the mot has to be done via the dealer as how can you check the chassis number which is the first thing that gets checked here in spain ,Let me at one and i will find a way to by-pass this device and fit a cable pull .

Hello! I suspect the Cruise Control Switch is the culprit...Let me know if you do not have a voltmeter...The switch can be tested...Pop it out of the panel...Wire colors are...Pin 1=Gray...Pin 2=Black/Red/Purple...Pin 3=Yellow/Green...Pin 4=Gray/Red...and Pin 5=Blue Red...Set meter to read 12 volts...Push two safety pins into the rear of the in-place connector...One into the Gray wire...One into the Blue Red...Connect the + meter probe to the Blue Red and the - probe to bare metal ground...Start the engine...Turn cruise switch On...Record reading...Move + probe to the Gray wire...Record reading...Move +probe with pin and push it into the rear of the Black/Red/Purple wire...Record reading...Send a comment with results...Guru....saailer

first.the mot is a govenment safety check,it is not a mechanical/electrical fitness test.so it passed an mot.....
now the gearbox W is for winter setting,it allows the car to pull away in 2nd gear and change slightly higher,NOTHING ELSE.
the gearchange has nothing to do with cruise control..or vice versa...
if the car wont go into/allow you to change then either its the selector plate or the gearbox inhibitor at fault......could go anytime.

Misfires until ignition is turned off then on again.

I wouldn't panic just yet. The most common cause of that is simply poor spark plug wires. And if it is the ECU, or something similar, call an auto wrecker and get one for cheap. Don't be afraid of used parts. You drive on them every day.

Cruise control isn't working

just had the same problem... also noticed that my rear brake lights didn't work... sounds like two separate problems but as I did more research, found that both function off of a "brake light switch" that is located under the dash next to the brake pedal. Have someone look at your brake lights to verify that they are working... If not then most likely same problem I had....

In my case, the wear and tear on that switch caused a small plastic clip on the switch to break such that the brake lever never made contact to trigger the switch to turn on the brake lights and never allowed the cruise to engage.

Probably other potential causes but thought I would add since I experienced cruise control problem recently in my grand prix.

Replacement is very easy... and switch was only $12 at Advanced Auto Parts.
