The distributor is on the back of the engine (that's the side that the transmission hooks up to). You will need a socket set and a paint marker (you might need a screw driver too). Remove the distributor cap (if the distributor cap is good you can leave the plug wires attached) carefully mark the rotor and the distributor so that you can easily see exactly how the two aligned while attached to the engine. trace an outline around the base of the distributor where it fits into the block so that when you remove the distributor you will be able to clearly see exactly how it sat on the engine. remove the bolts that secure the distributor to the engine. Give the distributor a light twist and pull hard directly away from the engine. Realign the rotor and distributor as they were aligned previously. Make note of relative position of the splines/forks on the back side of the distributor that fit into the engine. align your replacement distributor and rotor so that it matches the old one exactly. mark the correct alignment. Making sure that it is still aligned. insert the new distributor into the engine and lightly hand tighten the screws. Make sure that the screws are just tight enough to hold the distributor in place but loose enough to rotate it with ease. Make sure that the rotor is still properly aligned. make sure that the distributor is sitting against the engine block exactly how the old one was. Double check the rotor alignment and tighten the screws so that the distributor is snug but so that you can still rotate the distributor with some effort. double check the rotor alignment and put the cap back on. start the engine and give it some gas by manipulating the throttle body at the engine compartment. If the engine doesn't sound right, slowly and carefully rotate the distributor until it engine sounds like it should and tighten the bolts so that it can't be rotated any more. close the hood and go for a drive. you can adjust the timing by rotating the distributor if it still doesn't seem quite right. 0 Pts Rate Answer

Im getting ready to change the distributor on a 1992 Chev S10 pickup. I have done many on chevy small blocks but I havent looked at the s10 yet. Is there anything odd about the s10 that would cause a hang up ? Its my stepsons pick up and I guess a local place wanted $800 to replace the distributor, cap, rotor. Un real. Thanks for your time!

What are the signs of a bad pickup coil?

A bad pickup coil in the distibutor will generally fail at extreme tempuratures(mostly hot).It can cause backfiring,missing, and crank but no start.I have also seen the reluctor(on the distibutor shaft)cause similar issues(but usually not affected by temperature).You might see the same problems from a bad ignition coil as well.Try the cheapest part first,but if you do both and still no change,the reluctor is replaceable by a average mechanically enclined person.Just be sure to mark the rotor position on the distributor,and mark the position of the distributor on a stationary object(like the intake manifold)before you remove it.This will help to get it back in with the timing "in the ballpark".

My 1990 TOYO. 4RUNNER V6; Oil is getting into Distributor. Oil vapor get into my Distributo and melts my rotor and Dist. cap. Please help.

Check the Distributor shaft for any sign's of play. If play is present,you have (1) of (2) choices :
(1) Relace Distirbutor
(2) Have Distibutor rebuilt
There is a seal in the distibutor that will wear and cause oil to get inside of the Distributor.

Also check to see if your vacum advance Diapham is broken,that will cause oil to get inside the distributor as well.
To do the test,connect a vacum hose to the vacum advance(that's the round thing on the side of the distributor),you can suckon it see if it hold's vacum or you can purchase a hand held vacum pump.

Lastly,are there ANY other line's attached to the Distributor ?

Lower gear on distibutor is severly worn by cam shaft

This was a common problem on the Vortec for a year or two. The distributor gear was too soft and prone to wear.

Here's the proper procedure to replace:

You could also exchange the entire distributor for a rebuilt one.

2000 dodge durango 318 v8 quit running while driving.cranks but won't start or fire.

Check to see if there is any spark coming to the spark plugs from the distributor,if so change out your plugs, if not check from the coil to the distibutor, if so then change distibutor cap and button( if that still dossn't get it try the entire distributor), if not than check the hot wire going into the coil and if that is hot try replacing the coil but if not then i think you may have an electronic or wireing issue

How set distibutor rotor and place the timing mark on blazer 2000

If the distributor was removed and the rotor position was not marked.You will need to turn the crankshaft until cylinder 1 1st cylinder on drivers is at tdc.The when setting the distibutor back in make sure the rototr is lined up with cylinder 1 on the cap. If it keeps throwing out a ckp correlation code but seems to run ok you will need to turn the distributor while its in the vehicle just a little one way or the other.Usually if its off the ckp correlation code will turn the engine light on immediately.I usually leave the the distributor snug but loose enough to turn until that code stops coming up.Once you get that code to quit coming up tightened the distributor down completely. There should be a timing mark on the harmonic balancer.Mark it with white crayon or chalk for visibilty yellow works as well.You need that mark to line up with the marks on the timing chain cover.

Changing pickup coil

You have to remove the distributor from the engine then remove the distributor shaft from the distibutor housing, then you can remove & replace the pickup coil. Make sure you marke the exact location of the distributor body in relation to the intake manifold and note exactly where the rotor is pointing in relation to the distributor cap. I always set the timing marks on the front pulley at zero and make sure that the rotor is pointing at the #1 plug wire terminal on the cap before removing any distributor as it makes getting it in time easier if you lose your marks. You should reset the ignition timing when you have it all back together again as you'll most likely be off a few degrees. Some of these distributors had problems with the magnets in the distibutor shaft that would mimic a failing pickup coil and they were prone to drive gear wear. If you suspect any of those problems it's often easier to replace the entire distibutor with a reman unit.

There is no spark. replaced distributor (coil) cap and rotor

You may have to check loose cables or wiring. Inspect the ignition coil, it should be in series with the distributor.

I just put a new distibutor in my GF 1998 civic It was throwing a 1362 code new distibutor solved that engine light is out, but now the car stumbles on acceleration of idle. It did not do this with the old...

the best thing is take that distributor out, exchange for other new one. make sure the new distributor is a right year for your car and model . good luck

Car won't start

take the distibutor cap off and replace the rotor. Its a small plastic piece with metel tips that turn on the distributor shaft...they wear out easily
