Question about 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

2 Answers

I have a Chevy Monte Carlo 3100. Somedays the transmission works just fine. Other days after starting and putting the car into drive the first time you have to stop the transmission will not engage. You have to drop it into L1 and rev the engine then it shifts hard into that gear. Very sporadic but getting worse. Have clean fluid and new filter. Any slowing down can cause it to slip out of gear as well. Seems as long as you keep the RPM up the car will stay in gear. Put some Fullers in it but didnt seem to help.

Took it to Auto Zone and was told because it was a 95 they could not hook up to the computer. Was told 94 and 95 models had a different computer hook-up. We are in a very small town so choices are limited at best to get a reading. Is there more than one solenoid in the transmission? I am going to see if I can find someone with a code reader to check it. Btw, thank you for the response. I will write back when i find out what the codes are reading.

Welcome to FIxYa.com

Sorry to tell you but the trans pump or torq converter is going out. Have the transmission shop do a line pressure test to verify psi. Depending on the mileage it well be best to seek another trans either rebuilt or used from the junk yard.

I do say please go to the trans shop and have an assessment done.

Thank you for using FixYa.com

Take the car into an auto parts store and have them scan for error codes (usually cheap or free, so call around for the best price). Sounds like a solenoid on the transmission may be going bad and needing replacement. Let me know what you find out for the error codes.

Yes, there is more than one solenoid. A transmission shop would be able to figure it out but of course it will probably be a little costly. Dealerships will probably have a computer hook up too, but again, you will probably end up paying more for it than at an auto parts store.

Could be a dozen different things.
Is the check engine light on ?
Does it happen at the same time or under the same conditions ?
Does it start back up or do you have to wait ?

I had this same problem on my 2005 monte carlo, took mechanic a while to figure out it was the idle air control valve. They also replace the idle air control motor.

97 monte carlo will not start

if you remove the battery and charge it than reinstall (make shore all lighting and non essentals are off) and if the car runs for awhile then the problem most likely is with the alternator
