I know this may sound crazy! And, yes, I'm quite an experienced driver with 20 years under my belt; however, I just purchased a 91 Honda Accord. Which gear should I be putting my car in to drive it? This totally threw me. Never drove a car with this many choices and it didn't come with a manual. So... D4, D3, 2, 1... which is it? Just got it. Dont' want to be headed for a new transmission because of ignorant abuse. Please help. Thanks!

Use D4 you can use D3 when you don't wish to have overdrive on (like when climbing a steep long grade). Other gears are normally not used and can be pretty much ignored.

How do you read the trouble codes on a 91 honda

Older cars used the OBD 1 system for retrieving codes, check your owners man, for the location of the diagnostic connector under the hood, use a compatible scanner, most newer scanner's have the cable needed for making the connection. Good luck!

I am purchasing a 1991 Honda Accord EX with 60,000 miles. The engine mounts need replaced to fix a vibration at stop lights. Any other issues that I should look at fixing as part of PM?

Yes, I always do the same thing when I buy a new vehicle that way I keep track of it and know exactly when it was done. first buy a new air filter, new fuel filter, new spark plugs, and maybe plug wires. check all belts and hoses. and change oil and filter. these things will pay for themselves. have fun. Wow a 91' with only 60,000 miles that's amazing. I've got 178,000 on my 93' accord lx and it's still running perfect!!

How do I loosen the bolt on crank shaft?

Hi Manuel

The bolt comes off, in an anti clockwise direction.

I normally put a socket on an extension bar, with metal tube, to extend the length, on to the crank pulley bolt.

Secure under the vehicle with wooden block, and spin he starter, this will loosen it off no problem.

But this procedure must be carried out, before the cam belt timing is disturbed.

Airgun can be used to replace the bolt.

Good Luck !

A FixYa rating would be Nice......Thank you ! John.

Honda accord ex 92

Crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) removal- disconnect neg battery cable, remove belts, it would be a good idea to soak the bolt w/ penetrating oil overnight, there is a special 'crankshaft pulley holding tool' available to secure the pulley while removing and installing the bolt. Some parts stores loan tools for free if u purchase parts from them, I don't know if this is available, but it would be worth checking out. Attach holding tool and remove bolt securing pulley. Carefully remove pulley from crankshaft, Do NOT pry off. Remove key from crankshaft sprocket,
Install: install key on crankshaft sprocket, slide pulley on, apply clean oil to bolt threads but NOT to washer contact surfaces, secure crankshaft w/ holding tool, tighten to 159 ft lbs (91-93 Accord), install belts, re-attach neg cable.

91 Honda Accord No spark

If the timing belt is damaged(broken or missing teeth) you will get no spark. One easy way to tell is that many times the engine will sound different as it turns over, than it used to.
